Description
The Angel of the Lord (whom many believe to be the pre-incarnate Jesus) appears to Samson's parents and tell them not only that they will have a son, but that he will be a Nazarite, meaning there will be a specific set of conditions they must follow, such as no wine, no touching dead things, etc... When he leaves, Manoah offers a sacrifice, the flames of which provide the escalator for the Angel out of the scene.

Which is what is being depicted here, the ascension through the flames of the sacrifice. A rich metaphor as much as a dramatic exit!
