Description
"Magical...Completion! This wonderful friendship we all share is worth fighting for! Magic Ranger, Twilight Sparkle!Name: Twilight Sparkle
Element: Magic
Spirit Type: Unicorn
Weapon: Horn Staff A
Mecha: Owlowicious the Owl
Bio:
* One of the most gifted minds in all Equestria, Twilight Sparkle has been studying the history of the Great Pony Spirits and the nature of Magic for as long as she could read. At a very young age, she successfully applied for Celestia's School For Gifted Spellcasters, eventually becoming Princess Celestia's Star Pupil.
* Eventually, however, Celestia requested Twilight move her studies from the city of Canterlot to the town of Ponyville, claiming that a more open environment would help Twilight learn more, and that Ponyville is a very important location in Equestria's history. Though not fully convinced, Twilight eventually agreed.
* Initially, Twilight is highly reticent to make friends, believing them to only be a distraction from the things that really matter. Even once the Team is formed, Twilight believes that they're better off not getting too personally attached and should focus on their Mission, but eventually, she comes to realize that her Friends really are an important part of her life.
* Organization is one of Twilight's best skills. She is keenly able to recognize others' talents and put them to work in a highly efficient manner.
* Growing up, Twilight always admired her older brother, Shining Armor. Prior to her joining Celestia's School, however, Shining joined the Royal Army and left home; ever since, Twilight prefers not to think about or discuss Shining, though she one day hopes to see him again....
* Shortly after arriving in Ponyville, Twilight found her house frequently visited at night by an Owl who wanted to come inside. Much like her view of the Team, Twilight initially was simply annoyed by the Owl, but eventually, after learning how powerful Friendship could be, she took the Owl in and named it Owlowicious, her official assistant.

Prior to becoming Ponyrangers?
Rainbow Dash- A good deal. Part of her training regiments include regular combat practice and sparring.
Pinkie Pie- None, but she CAN throw Parties so aggressively that some might consider THAT a form of combat.
Rarity- A little. She is a Lady and doesn't much care for violence, but she knows one must be prepared for when things get ugly, so she's taken some self-defense classes.
Applejack- A good deal, though it's mostly self-taught. Fending off thieves from her farm, protecting her family from wild animals...she's learned how to scrap pretty well over the years.
Fluttershy- No real COMBAT training, but she is well-versed in physical therapy and dealing with aggressive animals, even big ones.
Twilight- A little; nothing special, but she does have a beginner's idea of how to use magic defensively.

That mostly works. My only disagreement is Twilight, surprisingly enough.

You think she'd be more trained in Magic-as-Combat?

Not just that, she was identified as a potential bearer of the Element of Magic at a young age in canon. The egg test was just to confirm that. Knowing that, I would think that Celestia would include training in physical and magical combat.

I don't recall it ever being explicitly stated that they knew Twilight was potentially going to bear the Element of Magic before she tried to enroll at Celestia's school; where is that stated canonically?

Lauren Faust mentioned it in one of her journals before she left the show. I'm not sure how canon it is now, but it has some weight to it.

I s'pose, but it's not really etched in stone either, and to my mind doesn't really fit for how I see Twilight's character.

That's a fair point. So, RD is the most well trained, AJ's a brawler, and Rarity is trained in something like Tai Chi or one of the more elegant styles.

I just thought of a Battalizer for Twilight, and you can probably guess what it is. Though, honestly, team powerups are the way to go for a team based show.

The thought HAS occurred to me, but ultimately, I don't think that's gonna happen; I dislike Battleizers as a general rule, mostly because it gives the Lead Ranger even more clout than they already have. I much prefer Team-wide Power-Ups (or "Shinkenger"'s policy of allowing ALL the Rangers to have access to the Super Mode if only one at a time), if you catch my drift.... ;3

Don't I know it. I remember Mystic Force. "Hey, let's give the red ranger even more screentime, even though the season's primarily been about him anyway. Other rangers on the team? What other rangers on the team?"

To be fair, "Mystic Force" was in general sort of terrible (all the worse for mangling "Magiranger", one of my all-time favorite Sentais). lD; "Dino Thunder" honestly pulled it off decently, IMO, even if the Battleizer itself was one of the worst-designed of the series. X3

Though, Abaranger had it's own Battleizer in the Triassic form even before it was adapted into Dino Thunder. The newer one seemed tacked on for whatever reason.

Gojira007 In reply to DrewB1442 [2012-11-07 17:39:49 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the AbareMAX form is a bit of an anomaly in Sentai, and it does kind of leave "Dino Thunder"'s Battleizer feeling a bit redundant, but to my mind it works more because of how it's introduced. Unlike most Battleizers which are just sort of flashy new toys for the Red Ranger, DT's comes about as a genuine result of Connor's character growth, and that to me makes it worthwhile.

Heck, SPD's battleizer becoming obsolete after one episode sums up what you should know in a team based series. Solo actions would only get you killed, teamwork will have better odds of keeping you alive.

And thanks; after Rainbow went...kind of awry, I chose to tone down the civilian outfits, but Twilight, by good fortune, managed to slip in before that 'n' wound up getting one of my personal favorite civilian looks. So glad you like. ^3^

...wait, Violet as the leader? What madness is this who would do such a thing
Okay, serious mode on. Goji, I really have to hand it to you. Yes, it's noticeably rougher since you drew it first (though the extra time you said you put into it definitely shows) but it's easy to tell that this was the drawing which set the others in motion and served as the baseline. Adorable is the word which dominates my thoughts, and I'm not sure I've used it for the Ponyrangers yet--even if I have, nowhere does it apply more than here.
First let me quickly point out that as far as I'm concerned, you've handled Twi's backstory and motivations perfectly. Her mindset is something I can relate to and the bit about Shining Armor is touching, not to mention a great lead-in to a dramatic character appearance down the line.
Civilian Form
Twilight's Gala Dress makes an excellent transition to human form, and I love how you've repurposed it as a sorceress's robe of sorts (is that a hood I see oh please oh please tell me it's a hood!). She looks like a meek but ultra-powerful mage, not one to jump into the fray but with more than enough strength of will and magic to do so if she must. The book is a perfect extra touch. She should probably give it back, though--the narrator won't have anything to work off of. Doubling the previous sentiment of approval of ethnic diversity, too.
Hero Form
There's less to say about this design since, well, we've seen it already in different colors and variations, but it's just as solid here as with the other members. I'm curious as to how her staff differs from Rarity's power-wise, however.
Overall, I approve. , and pressure off.
An excellent ensemble all around!

It's actually one of the cool things about this project, playing with the formula trappings that so define Sentai rather than shackling myself to them. That is the kind of madness that would do such a thing. <3
Super glad to hear you like it so much. I was sorely tempted to re-do this pic, if only to have a version with better coloring, but I ultimately felt it better to show where the baseline for the series got established, and as you say, it works out more or less for the best, much to my relief. ^_^
Also, not to give away too much, but you will eventually learn more about this version of Shining in the future. ;3 Definitely happy to hear Twi's backstory elements resonate with you too; it means a lot to know such a big Twilight fan likes my take on her history.
Civilian Form
Yes, that IS a hood you see, though Twilight rarely if ever puts it up. As you say, it's a Sorceress's robe, and to Twilight that means it's a symbol of pride and dignity, not secrecy. Only the finest graduates of Celestia's School may wear it, and each one is individually tailored to its recipient (one of Rarity's best-paying clients ;3), which is why you'll be seeing one in Purple some time down the line.... >3
Hero Form
Interestingly, there is a minor bit of difference with this uniform than the others, though it's one I'd retroactively change if I could. Twilight's crest sits on a dark-purple background instead of the black all the other uniforms use.
As to the Staff, the base-line powers are the same as Rarity's, i.e. the top point is for general spells while the bottom tip is for more personal magic. However, because Twilight is more magically versatile than Rarity, the end result is that the top point becomes a bit more all-purpose for her in general, while the bottom point becomes the one tool by which she can tap into her inner-most Magical Potential, bringing out a power she does not yet know how to fully awaken or control, but which she is striving to learn more about.

There are two reasons why Twilight would put up the hood that I can think of: 1) She's trying to protect as much of her body as possible during an experement and 2) It's cold outside and she puts it up for warmth.

I think she may be my favorite of the pony rangers you've done in this series! The picture of her clutching the book seems particularly in character, and it's just all-around well drawn. Love the outfits too! Wonderful, wonderful work!
(And I have to say, even though it's the sort of thing that really shouldn't have to be said, but... ah, I love when people draw the ponies as all different races.) <3

Wow, high praise indeed. So glad you like her so much, she was the first of the Team I actually drew so I've been keeping her in reserve for this very reason. Save the best for last, right? ...well, OK, it's really more to fit the Role Call, but still. X3
(And yes, as I said on Generous Ranger's deviation page, I have a hard time imagining the Mane Six as anything but ethnically diverse. <3)

Very Nice! Twilight's casual wear seems very mystical, like Harry Potter or Gandolf. I can't wait to see the rest of sentai-pony cast, I bet they will look just as great.
Rarity seemed to have a darker complextion the Twilight does, so I am guessing that Rarity is Afercain American and Twilight is Indain, am I close?
