Description "By Water and Wind, Sun and Sky, the Power of Friendship that never dies: To save our world which lies in danger, I step forth now: Zecora, Sage Ranger!"

Name: Zecora
Element: n/a
Spirit Type: Zebra
Weapon: Spirit Staff and Mask Shield
Mecha: n/a

Bio:

* Growing up far away from the continent of Equestria, Zecora is a well-practiced Medicine Woman who came to Equestria to study the rare herbs and plants which only grew there. Well-humored and equally well-learned, she is often a little anxious to meet new people or make friends.

* Consequently, she settled in the wild forests outside of Ponyville, where she spends most of her time alone in her hut studying new medicine formulas.

* She wears an enchanted medallion around her neck which possesses Magic similar to the Elements of Harmony, but until her arrival in Equestria, she was unaware of its powers.

* Although she is hesitant to visit Ponyville, since most of the citizens there greet her with distrust, she nonetheless sometimes has to in order to purchase materials for her work.

* Eventually, she befriends the Pony Rangers. She and Twilight in particular bond over their shared love of learning and Study.

* After discovering her Medallion's powers, Zecora chooses to become a part-time member of the Team; she still has trouble trusting others, and is often quite busy with her Medicine work. However, whenever things get particularly dire for the team, she is always ready to jump in and lend a hand.

Ehh...makes sense t'me. Β Fits this context better that way, honestly.

Ooh, nice ranger outfit. I dig her mohawk in the "regular" form, too. And she speaks in rhymes yes. X3 Hee hee.
I was thinking exactly that about her and Twilight! They ought to get along well - with the little spice of debate over science and "well I can't prove why, but it works so far", for instance.

I'm actually waffling on whether I want her to speak in rhymes still, or if she only uses rhymes on special occasions. It's a surprisingly tricky call.

I know Lauren Faust's original idea was that Zecora could be kind of a mentor to Twilight, but I actually see them more as Book Buddies, personally. ^_^ Hadn't thought of the debate angle, actually, but I quite like that too.

Well... If you're going to write actual episodes, I'd suggest limiting it to special occasions and "calling your attacks" moments. It might get strange to keep it in long dialogues, and tricky to write without it seeming forced.

Well, not that you can't have two mentors, but as clean-cut as the FiM show is, it feels like Celestia is Twilight's main mentor figure, so Zekora could have a better place in a slightly different relation, for variation.

I don't think I'll ever have the time and energy sufficient for full eps, but there probably will be "dialogue samples" of one kind or another down the line, so I guess we'll see when we get there. ^_^

Right, that's kind of why Zecora's presence in the show has been so small; as originally conceived, she'd have been Twilight's "practical" teacher, back when the Action-Adventure element was originally seen as being a bigger element of the show. With that element downplayed, though, Zecora can't quite play that role anymore. But I still love her. <3

Little "samples" like that can be a lot of fun on their own, even when they leave a want for more. But then maybe someone else will pick it up!

...Goji, what you have done hereβ€”and probably without ever suspecting itβ€”is create what is, and likely will remain, by far, my favorite piece of this entire project.

I know I gushed over Spike. I still want his Figuarts. However, unless you have, say, a Trixie or Celestia coming down the line who is even better-designed than thisβ€”and that will require some work on your part since you've gotten so much right here--I think we've hit zenith. Some of this is certainly because the skills you've been gaining in drawing human forms over the course of this project shows--but the character itself is still the main attraction.

Civilian:
- Instant love. Instant. Love. This is the kind of design I want to see standing in a windstorm, hand and defiant expression to the sky as she shout-chants her words, her cape billows, and magic erupts from her staff in all directions! Color scheme is a perfect mix of earth tones with a little bit of zebra stripe thrown in to keep things from becoming drab. Once again, a perfect outfit of a sorceress, except this time of a different breed; Magiranger sensibilities through and through here.
- I do wonder about her midriff in a ground-fight against fodder or an MOTD, but less so than if it were a part of any of the other Rangers' outfits; she definitely appears to be one of those types who avoids close-combat or can use her staff to keep others at bay while she wades through a crowd.
- Speaking of--are the Spirit Staff and Mask Shield two separate weapons? If so I love them like crazy; if not I think I'd find them a bit unwieldly.
- I was going to say she and Twilight would likely make an excellent duo, but another look at her bio reveals that you've already thought of that.

Morphed:
- Instant. Ultra. Love. Here's where we come to the main course. Between this outfit and her profile, I'm getting tons of shades of AbareBlackβ€”which is perfectly okay because AbareBlack was awesome, was a fish out of water, and didn't have much in the way of mech-power. However, I bet this Zecora could take down a giant monster by herself under the right conditions.
- The power-stripe design of her outfit strike me as ultra-cool and tickle my love of symmetry, and her helmet works, even with the mohawk. I don't even know how. It just does. The yellow placed on strategic parts of the costume is also excellently executed.
- Not to backseat-design or anything, but it if were me, I would actually lose the cape. Your two designs suggest having her going from traditional magician in civilian mode to a more aerodynamic fighter-type when she henshins; having the cape on her transformed form throws me off.
- That said, if you're keeping the cape in order to give her a moment/mode where she eventually dramatically sheds it to become faster/even more powerful, disregard previous statement. ^_^
- The medallion clasping said cape could also stand to be a little smaller; its points are awfully close to her chin as it is, which could get... bad. Especially if it's able to spin. Can it spin? I want it to spin

All your offerings thus far have ranged from good to great to amazing, but here you've at last made a Ponyranger personally inspirational enough for me to consider writing about her, sir. Congratulations.

I don't know that I didn't suspect it at all; I'm very proud of how this picture came out, even in comparison to the rest of my "Ponyranger" output, so I had some notion that you might feel the same. Even so, I am indeed very pleased to hear just how resonant this picture really has been for you.

Oh, and I don't feel the need to be coy about this because I missed this weekend again (but intend to make up for it during the week) and don't want to keep you in the dark: there will indeed be Celestia AND Trixie. This project isn't just Not Over, it's only getting started. XD

Civilian
- Aaaaand that is now her Henshin Sequence. Thank you.
- Yes, the Spirit Staff and Mask Shield are separate weapons. So feel free to love 'em like crazy. X3

Morphed
- Well, a.) now I've got "Abaranger"'s intensely hot-blooded theme stuck in my head ([link] ), so thank you for that, sincerely! b.) I actually owe a lot of this outfit's success to Zecora's original design from the show; the color balance in particular I took straight from it, with the exception of the gold-orange bits for the medallion and belt. The AbareBlack parallels are, truth be told, unintentional, but as I do so love Asuka, I am nonetheless pleased to have them pointed out.
- Honestly, I feel much the same way about the cape. I was trying to decide if I wanted Zecora to have it in the civilian form or in her Ranger form and hedged my bet by giving it to her in both, a choice I almost immediately regretted.
- But yes, once I realized I was unsatisfied with the Ranger form having the cloak, I did indeed plan it out as being discardable, a la Piccolo's weighted clothing or, for a Sentai comparison, Shurikenger discarding his armor.

Again, highly happy to hear how much you like this one. Indeed, I sincerely hope you follow up on that inspiration to write for her, I'd love for you to dip your hooves in the "Ponyranger" 'verse. 8D

The morphing necklace becomes the shards like in the second episode. The shards swirl around the rangers going from the head downward, creating the suit as they go, then after finishing, becoming the chest piece again. The ranger then does a pose and the sequence is over.

Ooh, that IS cool. I may have to consider integrating it with my own ideas, in fact, assuming I ever get around to portraying the Henshin at all.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gojira007 In reply to DrewB1442 [2012-06-16 14:45:32 +0000 UTC]

Something akin to "Gaoranger": the girls tap their transformation necklaces, causing translucent horse-shaped spirits of pure color to gallop out of them, then around to their respective Ranger overlapping them and then shaping into the costume. Given what I have planned, I think I may use both your idea and mine, but again, we'll see. ^_^

DrewB1442 In reply to Gojira007 [2012-06-16 14:50:57 +0000 UTC]

I have never seen Gaoranger. Sounds like a great sequence. Definately better than my first thought, which was something akin to "Lightspeed Rescue". Then I remembered that I disliked that sequence.

[link] The helmets forming over the head is specifically what I was referring to.

I rather like the LR morph, myself, but I'm curious. Why don't you?

DrewB1442 In reply to Gojira007 [2012-06-16 19:13:31 +0000 UTC]

It's hard to say. It just felt weak in my mind. It could be partially my dislike of LR in general.

DrewB1442 In reply to Gojira007 [2012-06-17 01:24:48 +0000 UTC]

Back to the henshin sequence, it could be the jewel shards going from the feat up, stopping at the neck, then forming the necklace. After that the pony spirit could form the helmet.

Gojira007 In reply to DrewB1442 [2012-06-17 01:41:52 +0000 UTC]

That could work too, yeah. Admittedly, this could also all be academic as I dunno if I'll find the time and energy to actually portray the Henshin Sequence in Art, but we'll see. ^_^

Indeed, in fanfiction, it would be a thing that is only mentioned once or twice, if at all, but it is still fun thinking about it.
