Description This is a fast tutorial I did to explain some terms and basic things about how to turn your clay works into charms. This is not very detailed, just a simple guide with the item names so you can do further research on your own. It's kind of shocking to me how many people don't know how to actually use headpins so I just wanted to help you guys out. xD

There are hundreds and hundreds of detailed tutorials out there on the internet about these things, so use the right terms in Google and go wild.

For the clay, do you use different colours or paint over just one? I couldn't find anywhere to say if you painted over FIMO or Sculpey it'll come out right...

i don't really understand how the flat headpins work for charms

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrandmaThunderpants In reply to InuyashaRules6596 [2012-10-27 00:47:59 +0000 UTC]

Just poke them into your charm from the bottom. Trim the excess, and use jewelry pliers to make a loop. :3

Thank you so much for this tutorial. It was very helpful!
I knew a few things already but I also learn some new things, like
they headpin and eye pin (which works best) I thank you for taking
the time to put this together; it was wonderful for putting the pros and
cons as well as your experience.

I've been wanting to make
my own stuff and I love working with clay...tho it's been
a few years.

Man...wish I had found this tutorial a long time ago. I found out the hard way that simply sticking a headpin into clay doesn't mean it'll hold.

GrandmaThunderpants In reply to the-kawaii-ferret [2012-06-10 02:10:17 +0000 UTC]

Aw, yeah. I had to find that out the hard way too back when I first started with clay. ;A;

I'm just wondering if you have ever had any problems with headpins discolouring the clay while baking???

I've had a little trouble with some wires discolouring in the past and have not yet tried using headpins, which is a fantastic idea by the way!!!
Thanks and sorry if you have had this question before =x

GrandmaThunderpants In reply to Roxxelle [2012-04-04 14:47:35 +0000 UTC]

Hey there! I haven't had this question yet-- but I have encountered something similar. I used black headpins a few times and when baked the black paint on them would chip off. But it never caused any real discoloring, and the black paint chips were easy to flick off. If you use just simple metal headpins, I don't think you'll have any discolorations. Avoid ones that have been painted or sealed with some sort of color that may rub off. I've been using plain silver ones for over a year so I can safely say they don't cause discolorations.

I'll stick to the trusty silver ones, thank you for your experience!!!

Glad I could help! I know a lot of people didn't know the names of them, or just called them "tiny screws" so knowing their proper name should help people find them online. xD
