I wanted to draw a simple, vulnerable portrait of Dani. This was the result.

This thing went through several incarnations before settling into the version you see here.

At first I drew her with her pigtails hanging over her chest, but they drew focus away from her face and body, complicating the simplicity of the image with too much detail and busyness. I ended up just letting her hair fall loose behind her shoulders.

I wanted her to be exposed with nothing but a symbol of her music for protection, so I erased the clothing lines on her arms and shoulders to leave her bare.

And as for the ukulele itself, at first I had all the detail on the body and tons of detail on the neck and head, but I ended up simplifying it to once again keep the image clean.

In the end I’m rather proud of this, though the angle of her face and chin were really difficult for me to get right.
