I figured that since Dani, my OC, is being featured in the lovely gallery of fanfiction-dot-art (thanks so much, guys!!! I shall give you a shameless plug! [link] ) as this month’s featured character, I should actually explain who this character is. XD

Am I an idiot for not realizing this sooner? Probably. Well, yes. But that’s not what we’re here to discuss!

And now it’s time for a list of character factoids! (*drum roll, please?!*) I know they’ve been done to death, but I figure it’s the quickest way to introduce her. ^^

Name: Dani
Age: 20
Height/Weight: Short and bony
Hair and Eyes: Brown
Skin Tone: Pale
Story: “Future Talk,” in the Yu Yu Hakusho fandom.

And… that’s it. There’s really not much to Dani by way of appearances since she’s basically a plain, normal looking young woman. She’s got a crooked nose (made so when someone attacked her and broke it) that’s slightly upturned, small lips, and huge eyes that dominate most of her face; she’s been told she looks like a petulant child more than once. She also has hair to rival a lion’s mane, and because it tends to get in her face she pulls it aside in low pigtails approximately 82.74% of the time. And no, I don’t know if that number is actually correct. Let’s just pretend it is.

Most of that stuff, however, people overlook all that in favor of her most outstanding feature, which just happens to be her left leg. Why? From the knee down, you see, it’s deformed—her leg has been that way since birth and there’s not much of a way to fix it other than amputation and a prosthetic. Dani must use a cane to get around since putting much weight on that leg is excruciating.

As you probably guessed, her status as a cripple, when paired with her small stature, delicate appearance, and waifish demeanor, usually garners pity from people who first meet her. “Oh that poor dear with the Bambi eyes,” most think. “She looks like a crippled little porcelain doll! I must carry her up and down stairs because she will surely break if left to fend for herself!”

To that sentiment, Dani typically replies with a growl, possibly a few curse words, and more than a few dirty looks.

Dani hates being babied. SHE HATES IT. She tends to get snappish with people who baby her (I.E.: EVERYONE upon first meeting), and this usually results in people thinking she’s either stuck up, unfriendly, or a bitch (although a surprising percentage of them actually pity her even more, suspecting that’s she’s just jaded and lonely and that she needs even MORE babying to get better, which only makes the situation worse). However, as soon as they back off she becomes happy, companionable, and sweet. She’s intensely loyal to her close friends, though she only has one such friend (named Lauren, but that’s a story for another day).

Dani has many emotional walls, mostly because she has to have thick skin to withstand the well-intentioned but ill-received comments, assistance offers, and pitying looks of passersby. She’s only ever let these walls down to a few people, namely Lauren (and, over the course of Future Talk, Hiei and Koenma). If she talks about her handicap with you, it’s a sign she thinks of you as a friend. However, unless you get to be on the friendship level of someone like Lauren, you’ll never catch Dani totally exposed.

Playing off of that: Dani can be infuriatingly contradictory of herself. One day she’s nice and companionable, and the next she acts like you’ve never been friends, ever. This isn’t because she hates you, but rather because she noticed that her walls had come down, “UH-OH!”, and then she threw them back up as a safety measure. That reaction is the reason why she’s never been in a lasting relationship, and it’s why she’s only ever had one close friend.

Dani, contrary to her own opinion of herself, doesn’t smile much. In fact, she scowls pretty much all of the time (but her scowl is the scowl of a frustrated puppy, so it’s not like it’s menacing at all). Strangely, though, her face has often been called an open book considering her tendency to blush without control when someone she likes talks to her, twitch her lips when she’s knocked off-balance, and open her eyes as wide as they can go when she’s feeling exposed, embarrassed, or hopeful in a scared sort of way (like, say, when someone might be about to kiss her). Even weirder, though, is that she’s a pretty good liar when it comes down to it, and she doesn’t feel too bad about lying, either, because she usually does it to protect someone or the common good.

Basically, Dani’s unaware that she’s more than capable of being a bitch, but still, she means well… most of the time.

Wow, I’m not making her sound like a very nice person, am I? Let me just defend her for a second (as her creator/mother, I don’t think I CAN’T do this) by saying that she’s a real sweetie when you get to the point that she feels she can be honest about herself with you. In “Future Talk,” especially, she has more than a few secrets to keep.

Dani is a driven person who likes setting goals and meeting them. To that end, she can be TOTALLY OBLIVIOUS of others because she’s so 100% focused on her task. This happens in “Future Talk” a lot, when a certain demon starts to like her and she stubbornly refuses to see his actions for what they really stand for…

I also want to mention that Dani isn’t the most reliable of narrators. Sometimes she glosses over the things she doesn’t want to see but NEEDS to see, so if you read her story, try seeing past the things she says to get to the subtext underneath. She also tends to paint her picture of herself a little differently than the one I wrote out here, but… well, who’s more right: her or me? I feel like she writes her own story, to be honest, and that I’m nothing more than a scribe taking it all onto the page.

Anywho, on to more fun stuff. Dani loves music! She’s a composer by nature and she loves singing, playing instruments, and just making music. She can play the guitar (acoustic and electric), the piano, the ukulele, and the harmonica very well, and she has rudimentary knowledge of most stringed instruments (such as violins, cellos, and the banjo, oddly enough). She doesn’t know much about playing wind instruments, though, because she dedicated most of her time to learning how to use her hands effectively. Possibly to make up for her bad feet? I dunno. Music is her one true passion in life, and she thinks about most people and situations in terms of songs. Music plays a huge role is “Future Talk,” mostly because Dani is the narrator and she can’t get away from her musically-wired brain.

Anyway, I can’t say much more without giving away the things that happen in “Future Talk”. I hope you like (or are at least intrigued) by Dani. She grows and changes as the story goes on, too, so yay for character development!
