My fave Spartan-IIs spending some quality time together off the battlefield.
(That thing Kelly is holding is supposed to be a tablet with a light up-display...I didn't really know how else to get that across when showing the back of the device, so I hope the glow is enough.)

Of course not. They're just reading - in fact we know that Spartans did this kind of thing all the time when in the barracks (it says so in the books). They liked to spend time together. And even though I like to think of John and Kelly as a romantic pairing, canonically they're still best friends. So with that in mind this picture can work under either context.

Ok cool. I Really should get round to reading some of the earlier books. I was wondering in the romantic contex. Just beacuse of a couple of Spartan iii characters I was working on. It's nice how comfortable they are together John and Kelly and i the idea that John might have someone who isn't made of light to love.

Something I've always wondered is how do you make the linework? Do you draw it by hand or do you use something like Illustrator's pen tool? Regardless of that, it's no small feat to maintain a sense of life and personality to the characters with lines that crisp and defined.

I usually make my lines using two methods: (1) drawing them freehand in Paint Too SAI, and/or (2) using the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. So actually it's a combination of both the things you guessed.

no,they just got the most recent issue of their favorite comic and are reading it together. It's called Escalation and it's a comic about Commander Shepard.

I wonder what they're reading? An action packed novel? A comedy novel, to relieve tension? A heartwarming story, to distract them from the horrors of the battlefield? I imagine if it's an action packed war story, the details are pretty accurate, or if there are inaccuracies, they are acceptable to the Chief and Kelly.

I would like to think they do read a variety of things. ^^ John probably doesn't quite always grasp the nuances of the more imaginative things Kelly enjoys, but he still doesn't mind reading them with her. And yeah, the war stories they like would probably all have to be pretty true-to-life - they simply know too much to be entertained by one where the author hasn't done their homework.
