It depends on the mood x3 and what other colors the character has, if its in a cold area or with cold colors then maybe a warmish hint, or a cold hint if its a warm area or warm markings

As long as the color is darker it usually works xD or you could make the light lighter

Watching your previous works helped me to realize, that shading in different color from the base colors is more lively ^^ The trick with 3d defined lines is somewhat new though.

I love how much this is simplified instead of being all over the place compared to so many tutorials I've seen XD
Just one question, how would this work on paper?
I've always had difficulty with shading when it came to traditional art.

It works in just the same way, only diffrent tecniques, if you use paint you can paint over the shaded areas, if you use pencils or watercolor you need to find out were the shading is before you paint it x3
