Description

A gift for my father from a while back! Blue is his favorite color.

I've had this idea of a girl looking down through ice at a dragon-like creature since I was a kid. Though this turned out less dragon-like and more nothosaur + zebra shark, heh.

Not super happy with how the mountains turned out; if I redid this, I think I'd make a much more concerted effort to make sure that the background actually, uh. Looks like it's in the distance...? TBH there are a lot of things I'd do differently now.

Chatting with Amaryn-Philomena over on this post made me realize that I never posted this here!

This was a fairly limited-pigment painting. I used only PB60 (indanthrone blue), PB15 (pthalo blue), and PV19 (quinacridone rose). (Plus some silver mica paint for the water and signature, heh.) It was a fun experiment!

Indanthrone in particular is an... interesting paint. It is very, very pretty to look at--but it's prettiest when wet, because it loses quite a bit of saturation as it dries. You always need to use more paint than you expect, if you're using it on its own and aiming for the deep blue that it looks like it should be!

It's also a little finicky to control; it's prone to moving around quite a lot as a wash dries, and leaving weird less-saturated areas and wavy lines. That's part of why I mixed it with PB15 here; in addition to helping achieve the dark tone in the bottom of the painting, the two pigments seemed to help each other behave a bit better, heh.

But! Anyway. Indanthrone blue is lightfast, and pretty, so I use it semi-regularly despite its quirks. xD It's what I used for the deep night blue in this old painting , for example.

(...I also had a mis-packaged shipment that sent me three 15-mL tubes of the stuff instead of one, so, uh. I have a lot of it to use!)
