Description Completely uninspired again, so I decided to try something a bit different.  One of my all time favorite Vinyl Scratch artworks is  .  I have this artwork hanging in my room, so I look at it fairly often.  So I decided to try to portray the same effect, without using the work directly as a reference.  Sure, I knew the basic arrangement of the legs, but I didn't use the original as a reference because I wanted to test my knowledge of anatomy at the same time.

I feel like it came out fairly well, but even before looking at the original again I knew that those back legs weren't quite right.  Then I looked at the original and made a discovery that answers MANY of my past 'why does that back leg look wrong?' questions.

I'm very used to back legs that curve smoothly between the flank and the leg; the one exception I use regularly is when a pony's leg is kicked far back.  What I DIDN'T realize was that this concept is much, much more flexible then just that.  I did a couple of sketches of back legs (the top right two) and discovered that it seems to have a lot to do with what the leg is doing -- distinct parts seem to form when the muscles are contracted, and smoother lines when they aren't.  As I wrote on the page, this COULD represent tension and relaxation, but in hindsight I don't care to generalize that far, especially considering the artwork that started it off!

Out of curiosity, I wanted to see what a backward-facing leg curve on a distinct-flank paradigm would look like, so I drew the bottom leg.  The only thing I can say is right there on the page -- wut?

Finally, I experimented with that front left leg.  I'm not sure what I was thinking when I made the 'over strokes'.  They looked wrong then, and they're pretty much entirely wrong.  Hence the question mark.

The AJ was an attempt of mine to use my newfound back leg knowledge... and then I realized that it wasn't a good scenario for a back leg with a distinct flank.  Oh well.  It turned out OK anyway.

The last two require a little explaining.  A friend of mine on Facebook is a BIG FAN of Jauffre Jam (WATCH IT NOW).  He's NOT a brony, and he loves to jokingly berate me for watching the show, wearing pony shirts, etc.  Jauffre Jam came up in a Facebook discussion about ponies, and so I decided to have a little fun at his expense.

And no, I don't know why Jauffre is female in the MLP universe.  I started drawing the eyelashes before I thought about it.
