Description I met at Auto Assembly, and had a great chat with him. He gave me [the original!!1!] of this to color. It was my favorite of all the ones he showed me from his portfolio.
It gives me the same sense of dread foreboding that the Hobbits vs Black Riders scene in The Lord of the Rings always has. (So great work there, Joe!)

Joe's style is very, very textured. I wanted to retain that while making sure to bring a sense of space. So I really tried to differentiate the near/medium/far planes in this piece.
I also LOVE the creepy feeling in the linework -- especially those trees with that moon, So I tried to use light-color to accentuate the horror-movie dread. Lots of pale green. I want those fallen trees to look like they might be a bit rot-squishy.Β

I really like how Ravage came out. And I managed to tuck Hound pretty deep in under there by darkening the ground beneath him. For once, the scan here came out really great, even on the first try. So, hooray!

Thanks again, Joe. Keep on makin' art! And thanks so much for your friendship.

Prismacolor markers an' a bit o' white gel pen on white cardstock.

Oh gosh, these colours are so good! I totally got the same LotR feeling when I first saw this, you really captured the intensity well. It feels so alive and organic, but creepy at the same time. Well done

You and Joe make a great team. Your colouring and his linework would look awesome for a comic book some day.Β

Aw, thanks, man!
Whew, that would be a massive undertaking! He puts so much work into his art, and I take FOREVER to color.....

Nice work, Boss.Β  Your style of coloring suits this very well.Β  It's neat and retro.Β  I think you should do more work like this for us Geewunners.

I'll see what I can do, small pal.
What specific kind of retro-G1 things would you like to see more of? I could probably color anything else of Joe's I ask to, but you know I like to do a variety of things. Whatcha lookin' for, and I shall attempt to oblige!Β

Aww, Boss.Β  I was just thinking that your color application style suits the line art particularly well.Β  There's a lot going on with shading and detail in both the picture and color application that made me nostalgic for the more "handmade" feel of the better G1 art (and other art of the period), especially some of the covers.Β  I LIKE the new CG art, but I think it can lack texture, even when hand drawn.Β  I think Joe's style suits your coloring particularly well.Β

It's not often Teh Primeβ„’ does Dark and Scary... but when it happens, it is Very Dark and Very Scary
Love all the spooky greens among those deep dark shadows, it looks like a retro comic page with the solid blacks and muted colours

Here's hoping TFNation and TFcon will keep your colouring circuits happy for eons to come

Oh wow! What an awesome surprise this is!
You've done an absolutely cracking job with the colours. It looks even more creepy than the black and white did. It looks really old-school!!! The moon looks all washed out and pale which works great.
I see what you mean about the hobbit scene. I must have taken influence from that for the drawing subconsciously or something XD
The light highlights on Ravage really give him a shine and make him stand out. It's always tricky colouring in black (or white) objects, especially in a night time setting.
This must've taken you ages! Thanks so much for colouring it - it looks perfect!

Aw, shucks. It weren't nuthin'!
Yeah, black is TOUGH. But I'm super-happy about the unabashed purple I used on Ravage's underside -- I was imitating your fearlessness with vivid hues. Basically, I just tried to do cool light/warm shadow, go dark where I needed to, and make everything work! This was a lot of fun. I really do like this particular picture. I've still got the original, so I can say I knew you when you're even more famous.
All the best, pal.
