Description
This is a smooth looking GNOME Shell theme using new features like inset.Wallpaper by Bo0xVn [link]
Instructions:
Please avoid a manual install and use the GNOME Tweak Tool, it's much easier.
You can use the gnome-shell theme extension for easier switching of themes.
GNOME Tweak Tool
Make sure you have user-theme-extension installed. Load the GNOME Tweak Tool and go to Shell Extensions and click the "Use Theme Extension" switch. Now go to "Theme" and click the Shell Theme box and locate your theme zip. Now you can select the theme in the dropdown box. Make sure you selection the right version for the GNOME version you have, otherwise the theme will not show properly.
If you run GNOME 3.4, just extract the 3.4 version to ~/.themes

If you're using GNOME3 then themes have to be ported but using it with GNOME 2 is fine of course. Orta goes quiet will with Smooth Inset [link]

aah..here's the point. I use latest build 2.91.9** installed from gnome-unstable repo on archlinux. So I guess I should pe patient and wait for ported themes or do it myself?

If you're using GTK3 and the core GNOME3 stack then yes. Adwaita does go quiet nicely with it.

I run jhbuild GNOME Shell with GNOME2, so I can switch GTK themes. I haven't bothered with core GNOME3 yet.

Simply fantastic.
I'll now have to install Gnome Shell on my Natty test system just to try this out.
Hats off to you.

I've been speaking with the developers about themes for a while now. I'm not sure when there will be an official theme switcher, but don't count on it too soon.

It is a shell extension which loads the theme from the user (not the system dir). Good for system wide installs of g-s

Doesn't work for me. Followed the intructions and no luck, I deleted the folder completely of the original theme (Backed up in a archive of course) ... I am on Arch Linux if that matters?
Other then my problems, the them looks amazing.

What version are you using and what happened?
If you cannot get it to work, it maybe just a GNOME Shell bug.

The version is 2.91.90 and after copying the files to the place required and restarted, it simply closes the gnome shell and reloads the default theme. No error from what I can tell.

Weird but I heard of that before. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the features are buggy but there is nothing I can do about that.

Thanks anyway, I will try and see if there is an error causing it that I can fix.

It should be very comfortable to use, is not?

Should be just fine to use but remember GS is beta. I use GNOME Shell everyday with minimal amount of crashes.

Is it more comfortable in use than the classic Gnome?

half-left In reply to Alexander-GG [2011-03-08 22:26:39 +0000 UTC]
It's a different approach but I like it better as I always hit the hot corner in GNOME2 thinking it's GNOME Shell. I find it more comfortable switching windows than a task bar.

What about the system resources? Does it use more?

I've not really looked into that but GS does use the GPU a lot more than the CPU because it fully accelerated. I'm still using the GNOME2 libs, so I don't know about GNOME3 yet.

By the way, next Ubuntu will still use Gnome2 while Mint will use Gnome3. Can't understand why Ubuntu made such decision. If because of just stability issues...

Ubuntu want their own desktop design and probably politics involved as well. Linux Mint are sticking with GNOME2 classic. You'll find, Fedora 15 will ship GNOME3/GS by default and openSUSE are shipping a GS preview, with GNOME2 being the last version they will ship this release.

No, it's already decided that Mint 11 will have Gnome3. At least, that's what I read on OMG Ubuntu blog.

GNOME3 but not GNOME Shell, Basically they just using the newer libs and sticking with the traditional GNOME 2 layout.

Yes, this is what I meant. Seems, that this will make a lot of users (according to comments) switch to Mint from Ubuntu.

Politics.
GNOME could have helped the situation but they just want to get their default out. GNOME Shell 3.0 release with a theme selector would have been a big winner.
