looking at my stuff, you have to? what do you mean? you dont have to try and copy a style in fact coming up with ur own is prob better XD discovered that the hard way lol and highlights and stuff arent that hard once you get used to them! just practise practise practise!

Tis true, but it really flips them from 2D to 3D, it's a hugh difference !
IDK, I'll prolly take it as a starting point and then C how I can build on that.

I find it funny how people who make fakemons always draw them in sugimori style instead of their own.. how original

lol i know XD in a way its a bad thing i guess i got into the trend. i suppose if you draw them in pokemon style they look more pokemon like but there are some great artists on deviantart who don't use a sugi style, you just have to look around!

sorry I'm a bit confused about the part where it says to have your foreground and background colour as white and dark blue... why dark blue? =3

Hallm3 In reply to xLady-Mizu [2009-08-25 09:13:30 +0000 UTC]
ahh, that's for the shading and highlights, obviously white makes things lighter if you have your brush at an opacity but for the shading its best to use a dark blue brush because for some resson it just makes for better shading XD if you shade in black with an opacity it tends to turn it a weid colour, i dunno that' my opinion you could try both if you want!

AMAZING! finally i can make my creations look somewhat believeable - one question, do you have a tablet for going over the lines? coz i dont and when i scan pictures, i never have a true white background
HELP

Hallm3 In reply to GoingGaGa [2009-08-09 20:10:30 +0000 UTC]
thankyou its nice to know im helping XD in answer, not to sound rude or anything, but did you read the tutorial?? lol sorry i know you did its just i don't use a tablet or anything. If you read over step 2 again i think that helps but for making the lines black and the background white its just a case of messing around with the contrast/brightness of the image. I don't know what model of Windows etc. you have but whenever i open up an image i always get a 'fix' button at the top. from here i click 'Adjust Exposure' then lower the brightness and increase the contrast to get the lines black and then close the picture to save settings then open up the picture again and the dials have reset themselves again so you can fiddle with them a bit more, from here i just increase the brightness to get the white background
lol sorry for the rant XD

It's been a while since I've been to this page. I can do Sugimori Art Style without PhotoShop. I'm not really what you call "pro" in Sugimori though. See my pics to see my Ken Sugimori

well, do you have an editing program for starters? If yes, then open it up in that and start smoothing out the lines with a white brush. You don't hae to use a cutout tool i just think it helps to smooth out the lines. Im not even sure its on any other programs to be honest XD lol anywho yeah once you've done that just increase the contrast again so the lines are nice and black! hope this helps!

Yeah, you're right. I shouldn't sacrifice my style to make my pokemon look more legit, but at the same time I feel that if I master this style it will progress all of my art to the next level. My skills are at all different levels, and that really takes its tole on my illustrations I believe. Thanks again.
