Description
Here's how I color my clays since I only buy beige, white, and translucent. Why do I do that? It saves me monies because I hate spending the dough on a deep royal purple, only to use about as much as it takes to make one teeny tiny grape.I'm cheap, but not lazy. xP lol

btw it looks like you used chalk pastels, did you? because I could only get those results with the oil ones. Also, I get these little bits of pastel, with both kinds, that won't blend and look like little black dots. Is it just me?

at this point, i'm thinking the spots are b/c of the oil pastels. if you want, i would suggest investing in some cheap chalk pastels instead. just make sure that they're pastels and not... well... chalk. xP i hear you can get them at wal-mart or any craft store. i got mine at my old uni's bookstore so they were like $5 for the set - student grade, y'know? lol

Well I tried the chalk pastels again and this time it turned out fine. I think it was just one of those days.

hmmm... i've never used oil pastels before, but i suppose if they work for you then that's what matters.
black bits? O_o i've never gotten any black bits into my clay unless they were either on my hand or on the surface that i was working on. maybe try cleaning the area really well before you start working on it... or try wearing gloves and light-colored clothes when you're working.
also, don't forget to check your pastels themselves. if you see that they have black spots in the actual pastels, then maybe your (sister's) set has impurities in it.

YAY! thanks for sharing! I shall definetly have to "borrow" some of my sister's pastels and try this out.

hey, nothing wrong in "borrowing" if it's for crafting purposes.

Yaaaaay!! That's such a great idea
At this point, I tend to paint my clay with acrylics, but sometimes I wish I had colored clay, but at the same time, I don't want to buy a huge chunk of colored clay only to use a miniscule portion of it

Ahhhh i never thought about that, i always used pastels for flour. Well not always i only just started out 2 weeks ago. But wow great idea, now i don't need to go buy every sing colour of clay!
When you bake it does it come out fine?

HanaClayWorks In reply to pixypop [2007-06-17 00:25:30 +0000 UTC]
it comes out fine. all of my pieces were made with clay colored in this method. if you mix it with TLS (translucent liquid sculpey), it'll turn out just a little bit darker than what you originally had... but otherwise, it's fine.
Just... don't use acrylics on the clay before you bake, even if it's just a drop to color it! acrylics will bubble and kill the clay.

HanaClayWorks In reply to Dark-Poetess [2008-06-08 05:08:57 +0000 UTC]
i'm not sure since i don't work with air dry clay. maybe try using a small piece of it and coloring it with the pastel first to see if it works before you do a lot... that way, you won't waste anything
