Well, it has been awhile. So, time for Snape!(Property of JK Rowling, product of time well-wasted. Now I'm going back to homework.)

Very nice! This is Snape...not Alan Rickman that so many people draw. Very canon as someone said!

Oh, Grima. While I think Severus is the better man, the two do indeed share a lot of similarities. I'm glad you liked it!

His hair is amazing, his expression, everything! He IS Snape. I can see the man that Harry loathed and the one that Lily loved. Excellent!

His nose, his nooooose! It just makes me happy. His hair is also so very greasy and tangley, I can almost smell it. As always, wonderful job!
How is school going so far?

Hahahaha, ewww. Don't smell it! ehhh heheh heh, yuck.
School is school. It's about time for the first round of exams, and I'll see how it goes from there.
You?

XD Hehe yeah I shouldn't smell it.
Good luck with your exams then!
Pretty good. I'm working at Pullen and that's a long job but it's going alright. Still lot's to learn. And then my art assistant job is going really well, I'm really enjoying working with kids.

BTW - I really like the way you've done his nose here. With the curve and length, and those nostrils (how I love a Snape with good nostrils!), it doesn't need extra in the bridge department, IMO.

Thank you. I'm a fan of the roman-style hooked nose, while this one is more syrid than I usually draw. But it's grown on me (NO! BAD PUN!).

So very...Severus!
No, really, your portrait is one of the closest to my personale image of him: everything, from the sneer to the nose, from the hair to the skin is just, well, 100% Snape.
The Half-Blood Prince indeed!

A real treat! All of JKR's description rolled into a perfectly believable package. I am also a huge Rickman fan, but you have hit the mark in every way here. He's everything Severus Snape should be. I really think I'm going to look at him for a long, long time. Thank you for sharing. This is just - Wow.
And I haven't even started about your amazing talent in general. Each detail is rich and perfectly in place. Ah! I just don't have the words to describe how fantastic this is. It's like looking at a painting from one of the masters. ::

Thank you so much! What a lovely comment!
I, too, am a fan of Mr. Rickman. I loved his performance as Col. Brandon, and have since seen nearly everything he's been in from the last ten to fifteen years. But somehow, he is just not Snape for me. He is a good cinematic stand-in, but I prefer Snivellus.
I really, really appreciate the compliment. I am trying so hard to improve, and some days it feels like running into a brick wall. So, thank you. Thank you for the encouragement.

I have a friend who believes that when she feels led to do something beyond her current ability, it is because her Muse wants her to be a little scared and to go for it. She often says that the facts she's scared to do something means that that's exactly what she should do!
It's so obvious to everyone who sees your amazing talent that you have a gift, and all the advice I could give would be just to trust your Muse, who is leading you and taking you down the road you need to go, and the improvement will happen, probably without you even being aware of it. Of course, this is coming from a writer, who is a frustrated artist, but I think the same applies to artists as well. I know we have a lot of beautiful and emotive art to look forward to from you. All the best!

Oh wow. Your Snape is spot on. Everytime I draw Severus he's too fanon, but yours... just fits the books' description so perfectly... I absolutely love Alan Rickman but he's absolutely not how I pictured Snape. I imagined him skinnier and dirtier. Your redering is amazing, I can totally feel the hatred emanating from him, and I would be SO uneasy if that man was to teach me potions, which is, I believe, exactly what JK wanted us to feel about him. To be honest, it's the first time I've ever see such a good rendition of him, you have my most sincere congratulations

Don't worry. It's kind of drilled into us from a young age that unless a character is beautiful, they are not good. It was really hard to draw Snape, at first. I kept getting him wrong, because I wanted him to be attractive. :/ It took me a while to just try to draw what makes him who he is, and let people decide if he's attractive or not as they like. I think it's maybe the first step to seeing ANYBODY as who they are, letting go of these preconceptions of what is beautiful, and beauty equals goodness. It's really quite frustrating, though, trying to do that, I can say from experience!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment!

I'm in love with the way you draw him. it's so realistic and you're not afraid of making him ugly, but the sadness you show in his face makes him almost attractive, in a very strange way, i don't know how to explain it, it's just awesome. and congratulations on being the first artist i've seen accurately portray greasy hair. this is just way too good, i can't stop looking at it

Actually, I think you've hit upon why I like him. He is so ugly (and not just physically) but there is something about him that shines through anyway, and makes him almost beautiful, almost painful. Thank you!

Me too - only, I saw the movies first, then read the books, and had a paradigm shift! He really has such a presence in the books, I don't know how the movie image even came about! A.R. is lovely, of course, but after reading the books he really just isn't Snape for me any longer.

I read the books first and I try to keep the Snape's separate. Because I feel that he is portrayed as a nicer man in the movies than in the books. This picture really makes me feel the same things about him as the books did though so my nostalgic, HP loving heart is very happy. ^^

HapticMimesis In reply to CarpeDentum [2011-09-08 01:05:00 +0000 UTC]
This is true, he is much softer around the edges in the movies. I also think they tried to give him a false sophistication in the movies, which he didn't need. So, keeping the two separate is probably the best thing to do.

This is the Severus I picture when I read the books, more narrower, thinner, grim face, mattered greasy hair, greasy pale skin, long hooked nose, alot less of a neater "perfect" character as he is portrayed in the movies...
Love this, this is beautiful work, love the texture and depth of the face and the detail is extraordinary. Fantastic job

I am the same. I prefer the literary Snape, by far. I think Alan did a lovely job with what he was given (which was next to nothing! ) but I love the spitfire and sharp wit of the books' Snape so much more!

Thank you so much! The nose is sometimes very challenging, I actually am not quite sure I like this one. I usually like to give him a little more of a bridge than this, but still. I am glad that you like it. It's also very lovely to hear from you, I hope you are well.

I had not even intended him to sneer, and he insisted, which I thought was amusing.
The hair is always my favorite part! I don't know why it's so fun to draw that matted mess!

Words fail. I can't even express how much I love this. You've captured Snape in all his dark, greasy glory. The hair, the grimace, the lines in his forehead, the fact that he's holding a book--such an awesome pose!--I can't get enough of it! I just keep looking and looking.
