Description Well, it has been awhile. So, time for Snape!

(Property of JK Rowling, product of time well-wasted. Now I'm going back to homework.)

This is how I think of Snape. Imperfect but still beautiful to me! I love this work.

So realistic! But he doesn't look like a man in his thirties. He seems to me too much older than that. AndΒ his face is so wornout!Β Btw, the use of colours and shadows looks superb.

Maybe his face is so worn is because his history as a Death Eater was a little disturbing for him and weighs the man down?

perhaps... he had a dark past, that's a wonder how he still conjures such a powerful patronus... Lily's love was strong indeed... Always.

I would say this portrait is probably the truest one I've seen depicting the character JK Rowling created. Everyone seems to picture Snape as fairly attractive in some way, and I admit I do, too. However, he really isn't meant to be attractive in any way, besides his loyalty and courage. There's quite a lot of what she describes in your version and the realism of those features here is fantastic. Bravo!

AveryDjali In reply to mlfcntrx [2013-05-22 05:13:37 +0000 UTC]

I disagree. Snape is only described as ugly by those that hate him the most, and who are mostly unreliable in their interpretation of the world, namely Harry and the Marauders.

Also, if you look at old photos of Rowling's chemistry teacher, whom Snape is based off of, and you'll see a not bad looking man with dark curtain hair and a large nose.

I think the only factual thing that can be said about Snape's appearance is that he looked unkempt, had light skin and long dark hair with a pronounced nose.

All opinion of course. Regardless, your artwork is beautiful, Haptic.

Beautiful! The palette is really perfect for Snape and I love the delicacy of his expression. It's somewhere between bitterness and sadness. Really excellent work.

I do have one critique, but feel free to ignore me on this. I think that because your style is so very realistic that you have to avoid things like making noses cartoonishly over-large and things like that. It just creates a really uncanny image. Almost like he's wearing face-wax or something.

But this is still really gorgeous. It's such a beautiful depiction of this character. It's really great.

HapticMimesis In reply to cinnamon-lady24 [2011-12-06 08:37:08 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I'm glad it turned out well. It's almost too quiet for me, now that I'm looking back on it. I think in the future, I'm going to try to explore him in a more violent state of mind, get some really interesting expressions on his face.

I was trying to go glorious and ginormous, but maybe I overdid it a bit. I've known some people with horribly large noses, though -- just maybe I should take care not to overdo it.

I agree... I've seen some real life big schnozzles, but not quite like that one... It's a little distracting. Otherwise, I love how you did YOUR SS and not Alan Rickman.

I love that you drew him how he's supposed to look. Lots of people make him 'prettier' than he's supposed to be.

HapticMimesis In reply to AllOutOfBubblegum [2011-09-19 01:35:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, as I think I said to someone earlier, it's really REALLY hard to break out of that mindset where beauty=goodness. We're raised with that philosophy. We're also inundated with the pressure to be perfect, and to be sexually attractive, at all times. Every add campaign pushes us to fulfill that goal. Every movie, every billboard. So it's really difficult, sometimes, to draw an ugly character that you like, because there's the temptation to make him/her appear as beautiful to everyone else as you perceive them -- but then the whole point is lost. It took me a really long time and wayyy too many permutations of Snape to start drawing him in a way that I was satisfied with, that didn't betray his literary physicality. So, I suppose all that to say thank you, and to say I understand where the other artists are coming from.
