Description
This was a lesson-piece based on a painting by Jan Martin Maguire. I was trying to learn some new techniques with acrylic paints.I'm mostly happy with the way the coyote's head turned out, and the out-of-focus effect with the background. I apologise for the rest of the coyote and the very unrealistic rocks.
Acrylic on canvas paper.

Elegant. Beautiful choice of colours. I saw Jan's original. This is a very tasteful rendering with a lot of personality. I think the "unrealistic rocks" give this lovely interpretation of the real world a healthy touch of imagination. And the yellow... very nice.

rebel against "Brush wolfing". its whenever you chase a coyote on a snowmobile till its panting. a coyote or deer will not search for food after being chased till it pants. this happens usually in winter.

Fantastic choice of colors for this one. I must compliment you on your ability to draw rocks and actually make them look like rocks! I've always found that to be a challenge, and I know I'm not the only one. Also, the texture of the fur is excellent.

Thanks! I actually didn't think I did too well on the rocks, but it was getting to the stage where I had to stop before they ended up resembling ancient marshmallows! I'm glad you like it.

I love this one. I'm at the moment working on some fur, and I struggle, it's so hard to get it as real as you did here..... amazing.

Thank you. I find fur really hard in some media (oils for instance) but this one was acrylics, which seem to have been invented for painting fur! It does make it easier.

*sigh* I'm working in acrylics, still struggling Although I agree, acrylics is a great media. I think my problem is mainly the canvas, it is very hard to get nice details on this rough pattern it has....

Ah, canvas hates fine detail, doesn't it? I've resorted to priming my own boards for acrylics, just to get the smooth surface you need. Although this painting was done on canvas paper, which has a much shallower grain so is a lot more forgiving.

Fantastic job! looks good enough to be one of the illustartions you see in animal books showing their behaviour and their respective environment the colour variations in the fur suggesting light from the blue sky are a nice touch

Thank you kindly! I can't take credit for the composition though, as it was a lesson-piece taken from a book. The artist was making a point about the importance of the environment in painting animals, and I thought it was a lovely example.

Thank you! I'm glad you like it. I think I overworked the rocks too much. The gritty little bits of gravel are painted better.

I would recommend for anyone wanting to start to learn to paint wildlife in acrylics, especially if they like wolves.

Thank you. I used Chromacolour paints, the colours are much denser and truer than normal acrylics.
