Description It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.

-J.K. Rowling

As one of my friends here on DeviantART is fond of saying, "failure isn't the end of the world." It's a learning opportunity and a chance for us to grow. We cannot succeed unless we're willing to fail, and learn from those failures. That is how we improve, whether as an artists, scientists, philosophers, or the human race.

This stamp is something of an illustration/demonstration to go along with a tutorial I created recently. It begins like many of the ones we see here on DeviantART - a poorly-colored, flat stamp with a distracting font, wasted space, badly-aligned text that goes off the stamp, and no balance. To those of you out there who may be reading this and actually make stamps like that, it's not my intention to tear you down or hurt your feelings. But I hope you will take note - you are capable of so much more! But you cannot improve until you accept that you are capable of so much more. Don't be satisfied with mediocrity.

The stamp gradually changes (little changes, as you can see), undergoing tweaks and minor adjustments until it is the final product you see at the end. It doesn't take the talent of Michelangelo or the resources of Rockefeller to create that. It takes a willingness accept your own shortcomings and learn from them. Anybody can do it.

"You are capable of so much more." Wonderful words, and a cool stamp too!

You know those people who work hard in order to look back at their last moment and smile?

That's the only moment that they'll smile.

I see what you're doing there, improvement through trial and error can only work if you're not afraid to fail as conveyed by the quality of the stamp. Not crazy about the black stroke on the text toward the end, but the overall effect enhances the message beautifully.

Y'know, I kept going back and forth in trying to figure out if I wanted that black stroke, because I do tend to overuse it a bit in my stamps. I finally decided to go with it to show a sort of "finishing touch" on the text. Thanks for the fave and the feedback.

I agree completely. I've been an inventor for more than half my life - since I was eight years old - and if there's one thing I've learned from my work, it's that there is always room for improvement. Being able to build a machine that went far beyond your expectations is a good skill, but a better skill is to accept that this machine can still be improved, rather than becoming attached to the design and deciding you worked so hard on it that it can't possibly be better.

And you should consider all options, even if they're impossible... you might just discover something that you maintained for years as impossible was actually so simple... I did that recently.

Yep. And it's tough in art, because you do tend to develop attachments to certain aspects of your work. But sometimes you have to learn to let them go and look for something better.
