...is it called pixel art cause you only use a one pixel brush the whole time? or do you bucket fill and whatnot when noones looking?

It's called pixel art not because of how it's made, but how it looks. Bucket fill would achieve the same as colouring the pixels individually, nyeah? It's just a shortcut IMO.

If you sketch it out in pencil before, I consider this a colored drawing. NOT a pixel art, in which the base drawing would be done pixel per pixel.

Honestly, I NEVER thought about doing it that way.
I wonder if that's how gamemakers make their sprites too...

Alot of game makers use 3-d software and make it into pixel art. Some is generated in-game... for some, it isn't.
of course, alot of older games who use true pxiel art don't shade stuff except for the background.. but back then, i don't think there was such a thing as 'color dodge' ... could have been though, i'm not sure. XD

Sketching beforehand makes things easier though. It makes things look nicer in the long run too.
