This is a very interesting tutorial, I will give it a try!

My only issue is that flashy red text on olive background, it made it kind of painful for my eyes to read your notes XD

Hino, your tutorial make it sound so simple. :]

I don't understand Step 7: Color...

You just use the colors from Step 4 then layed it over Step 7, right?

I have tried this before. In one layer, I did the values of the work then used a new layer for the colors. I used the Multiply filter on the "colors" layers over "values" layer. What I get was a muddied version of the colors I did because of the black and whites of the values layers.

Am I doing something wrong?

hinoraito In reply to Khuzang [2012-04-29 01:58:57 +0000 UTC]

it's not "multiply" mode you should use but "color" mode

Megami-Yaiba In reply to Khuzang [2012-04-28 14:15:36 +0000 UTC]

You don't want the Multiply layer mode, you want the Color layer mode.

I'm so sorry but i can't tell if this is a joke or not >_<
Is that bad?

hinoraito In reply to ClashoftheBunnies [2012-04-29 01:59:24 +0000 UTC]

there is a bit of that. But yeah.. it's my technique XD

Undercurrent-32 In reply to ClashoftheBunnies [2012-04-28 11:04:08 +0000 UTC]

Its not. The less layers you use and the less time you spend picking your tools with the mouse, the more fluid you become and the more flow you have while drawing. And you want that.

About the b/w, thats also true. A good composition depends on its "values" That means how light or dark an object is and how well it seperates from the objects around it. Colour is secondary.

This is the most awesome tutorial which proclaims creativity and fun that I've ever seen (and I'm doing tutorials all the time XD) I've always wanted to learn how to draw with out using so many layers -_- those things drive me nuts.... only the color of the text is a bit vibrant, and for a moment I thought that it says 'save your life' instead of 'save your file'

I have been reading about digital painting and I'm surprised by the fact that most digital artist try not to use many layers and that black and white technique.

hinoraito In reply to J-Dasse [2012-04-29 02:07:47 +0000 UTC]

cause it's simple and any other way would be too complicated for my limited brain XD

What program is this done in? If it's SAI, then what do you mean when you say to set the layer blending more to "Colour"? Because I can't find anything remotely close to that. xD Best I saw was the overlay option.

Interesting guide, the only suggestion I would make for another is to change the color of the text. That bright of a red vibrates harshly against the background and can really give out some free headaches.

I think we easily fall into that mistake - especially when we are amateurs - that we overrate our tools... your tutorial nicely tell us this truth.
