Description
If I'm going to do steampunk, I'm gonna go all out, none of this "paint your whole gun copper and brass" nonsense. This is a test piece to see if I like the filigree technique. The two filigree pieces were just something I pulled off the internet, vectorized and scaled to fit the Mav cylinder. Now that I know that it works, I'll make up some proper ones that look much better.
Had a few problems with wrinkles and decal silvering, but it's pretty minor considering the overall effect. Next ones will definitely be better.

How'd you get the stencils to stay so cleanly? I've been trying something similar with a maverick of my own but they always come out blurred and messy.

It's Testors brand printable inkjet decals. It just takes some practice with water slide decal techniques.

Beautiful work! Filigree turns a regular firearm into a piece of art!

I agree! We need more of it! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find too many examples that I like, so I'll probably have to make my own.

Ah, finely someone cherishing the real victorian aestetics and adds etched artdesigns instead of brasstubes to a gun!
Great job.
But don't tell me you have the possibility to print golden decals?

No, I'm just good with CYMK and know how lighting works. It's sort of a dark mustard color, printed on clear decals, so it's really just adding shading and highlights to the gold surface. They're not noticeable enough, but I did put a lighter outline in the upper right, and a darker one in the lower left of each filigree to give it more of an illusion of depth. Kind of worked, but didn't print out right, so the next ones will be more prominent.

Obviously you are.
So, if I understand it correctly, you printed only the edgings (on clear film?) and put it over a coat of gold color on the barrels?

No, the gold paint goes on first, the decals were a yellow/brown with a light/dark trim that went over the gold. Since it's clear film with some ink on it, it just changes the color underneath it, like an Darken or transparency layer in photoshop. The trick is getting a color that looks like a darker version of the gold, and not something that has too much black, or too much magenta or whatever, and will look like a sticker, not a darker layer of the original like it should.
If I really wanted to get fancy, I could use the darkest and lightest colors (what I used on the edges) and do a gradient from bottom to top in the filigree shape. That would give it a more "etched on a round surface" look.
If you want, you can PM me, and I'll send you some of the vector graphic filigrees with the different colors so you can see what it looks like on a white background.

Thanks! I've been staring it at it for so long now that I can't tell anymore. 12 decals aren't easy to put on!
