I Don't think these are all the facts. US military has ethics and rules about shooting unarmed civillians. The only way an officer, or someone of high rank, would order to kids to be shot is if they had weapons aimed at them, or something els that made them a threat to the company. The terrorists do use kids and indoctrinate them to kill.

TheΒ Uniform Code of Military Justice Β (UCMJ) 809[890].ART.90 (20), makes it clear that military personnel need to obey the "lawful command of his superior officer," 891.ART.91 (2), the "lawful order of a warrant officer", 892.ART.92 (1) the "lawful general order", 892.ART.92 (2) "lawful order". In each case, military personnel have an obligation and a duty to only obey Lawful orders and indeed have an obligation to disobey Unlawful orders, including orders by the president that do not comply with the UCMJ. The moral and legal obligation is to the U.S. Constitution and not to those who would issue unlawful orders, especially if those orders are in direct violation of the Constitution and the UCMJ.Β

I have to say that it's a big issue when soldiers obey every order. This very trait was a big issue in Germany till 1949, when the militarism was not existent anymore. Soldiers would obey anything, every cruelty possible, if they got the orders. And we all know what cruelties that were. And of course the pre-1949 Germany is only the example here. Militarism is a big issue in many countries in this world, including the USA as well, as I might say. Not as bad as in Prussia and later Germany, but it's still an issue none the less.
And so saintly this man's action was, he is but one of many. And it could be that most soldiers blindly obey their orders in the US-military. We just have to hope that most soldiers have a consciousness about right and wrong.
