Description
Original image: [link]All right! Now I've gotten through, and personally interpreted, all the dragons we saw in the Dragon Manual (not counting the Boneknapper)!
Just like with the Skrill, this one took me a while to "get right" because of its weird mouth, but I'm finally happy with the result xD
The Whispering Death is interesting because it's ancestors have obviously been capable of flying, but have somewhere down the line chosen a life on the ground instead of a life in the air. Its wings have become sturdy, powerful arms with three hooked claws which it uses to climb and crawl through the rocky landscapes it has made its home. The dragons long, snake-like body is packed with muscles, making it much too heavy for flying, but it is instead an excellent swimmer and has been observed to be able to hold its breath for almost 15 minutes when diving for fish.
Unlike most other dragons, the Whispering Death cannot make any other sounds besides hisses. And should it feel threatened by anything, it will first loudly hiss to show its displeasure, before either spitting out a shower of scorching hot embers to blind the threat, or flat out attack it. It is mostly the young Whispering Deaths who will spray embers, as they are not be large enough to successfully protect themselves by fighting most of the time.
Dragon experts agree that this dragon is quite intelligent, as they have noticed when observing them the dragons have seemingly observed them back. Experts deem its intelligence and self-awareness to be on par with that of a Night Fury.

I made this MONTHS before the Book of Dragons short came out, and I believe a least a year before the TV series. This is just an interpretation of that one picture we saw of it in the movie.

I wondered a bit about its mouth for a second. xD I specifically recall to have read the Whispering death have seven rows of teeth, each rotating in opposite directions. Your drawing illustrates a more fish like appearance, yes? xD I like how it looks, though, giving insight on how it head would look like in reality, I'm just pointing it out ^^ I understand to its fullest it would be difficult to draw, without loosing the realism of the picture : P Thumps up anyway! ^^

It's different from what is now canon, because i made these before Book of Dragons and the TV series came out. This is what I personally interpreted from the one image we saw of it in the movie It is all there in the description. Descriptions are love. Read them.
Thanks!

I actually did read the description, and did it again after reading your message, and it does say it's inspired from the Book of Dragons. Which is also the name of the small film. With that said, I do acknowledge that I have misinterpret it, and for that I'm sorry x]

Ack, no I meant the Dragon Book show in the movie itself xD I should make that clearer~
I didn't mean to sound annoyed or anything, really! It's just that this happens every time, and that makes it seem to me like people don't read the description :/ and i'm getting a liiiittle tired of it

I can't help to feel stepped upon, for I understand your frustration, but instead of letting it hit me, try to make a longer description to prevent people from making comments you do not like, or otherwise cut off the comments. Because I did honestly like the drawing, and just added, in my opinion, relevant information on something you did not exactly point out in the description. As of now I am still insecure on whether you're referring to the book or the movie, because I do not recall they've told us much more than the name in the movie.

This was made before the Book of Dragons short was released and way before the TV series aired, so I was just going by what I thought seemed logical judging from the illustration that was in the Dragon Manual from the movie.
Thank you for your time.

This was made before the Book of Dragons short came out, and is based on my own speculations. In the short the Whispering Deaths can indeed fly

Hehe, thanks!
Yeah, I made this before the Book of Dragons short came out, so the "facts" are just my own thoughts about the species I made just from studying its picture from the movie x)

On he DS game of HTTYD, it seems nintendo have mucked up the names and renamed the Whispering Death 'The Ground Grappler' I find it really annoying how they change everything.

No, the Grapple Grounder was a completely new dragon created for the video games I have the Wii version
Aaand Nintendo weren't the ones who made the games either

Simple, I've found a paper texture on google, put it on top of all my layers in Photoshop and set its layer mode to 'multiply'

Mmmm, not according to logic With such a long and heavy body, and relatively small wings, there just is no way for it to be able to stay in the air, poor thing

Avafaidian In reply to Iceway [2011-09-29 18:26:48 +0000 UTC]
True, but according to logic, the Gronckle shouldn't be able to either. And many experts say that so giant reptile would be able to fly in general.
