Description Well, here we go again!

Part two of the commercial series that Humouring the Fates created for Spike TV. I'm pretty happy with the work we did here, and I'm glad that this time I can set you cats up with a link to the animated work this time, rather than just a few screenshots. Check it out:

>>> [link] <<<

This should be airing on Spike TV along with it's first half for the next several weeks in increasing increments... I generally find it right at the end of a commercial break, tied to just about any show on the network. And yeah, it was fun to animate Sam Jackson, but his face is really hard to draw... he's got some difficult features to capture.

I didn't do this alone, of course... personally I drew the keyframes and designed the characters, but I have to work out much of the motion for me first in red pencil, which helps a great deal. He's also the inbetweening machine, he's become pretty awesome at keeping up with my complex characters.

I didn't do much involving the colors (that's game), and I had no part in the backgrounds, lighting, 3D effects or textures (but did), but I drew all of the tracers, gun blasts, ricochets and those lasers that cut into the plane's wing. And all of the post work and audio was done off-site, which includes a lot of "camera" movement and special effects.

So... yeah! This is how we roll.

man was I about to jump off of my seat when I heard Samuel L. Jackson's voice.. extremely incredible, I don't know much about spike tv, but I've seen some shows, and I heard their going to be the ones showing Afro Samurai, also with Sam voicing.

Omg that's so awesome! This is really inspiring for me 'cause I hope to do animation in the future. And, as others have said, love how you did Samuel L. Jackson. That part was when I was really like, "OMG wow!" lol

I need to watch you

That's incredible! I love your characterisation of mr. Jackson--truly awesome. I can't imagine animating a character that complex without tearing my hair out. You are one talented human being with a whole mess of talent backing you up. Kudos to everyone involved.

I think I might just watch that again. And again. And again. It's like taking a dip in a cool spring of whoopass every time I see it.

Great stuff, like the merging of 3D with 2D animation, seems to be the way animation is going these days. Keep it up

Inkthinker In reply to Madmoonie [2006-01-04 15:50:47 +0000 UTC]

I did parts of that, yes. I'm just one gear in the machine, though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Madmoonie In reply to Inkthinker [2006-01-04 16:39:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes, of course. Very humble and nice of you to mention your peers. I have a question about the sequence though. I noticed what seemed to be several liscenced characters in the battle. Did you have to get permission to use those (like Megaman and Lara Croft) or were they general enough to not have to worry about that sort of thing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to Madmoonie [2006-01-04 19:26:25 +0000 UTC]

We used parody designs, designs that were close enough to the characters in question to evoke recognition but not actually the trademarked characters themselves... it's pretty common practice, and acceptable to a point. I certainly wouldn't want to wrap a whole show around them, but for the seconds that they appear in a commercial designed to promote video games, they sufficed.

It's a tricky thing, though, and often more trouble than it's worth.

Big guy from RE4. That knife is almost identical. I lose track of it while Sam and EvilDread are fighting...did ED catch it?

Yep, that's why the sync is as on-spot as it is, we animated directly to his audio.

Krauser?

Huh... still need to play that. But sure, that was totally intentional.

The knife hits the pedestal and balances the Monkey statue after the big blue guy gets coldcocked. He was never throwing it at the bad guy... Sam thinks a few moves ahead.
