Description
Just messing about when I should be sleeping, or working, or doing anything EXCEPT fiddling with this sort of thing.Still, it's more fun than clipping toenails.
Easytoon (as usual). 80 drawn frames, 25fps, tablet drawn.
Mostly this began as an expiriment in the sort of ramped motion that's utilised in the initial cut. I think I was still too linear with it, and you can tell I got tired of all the arrows pretty quickly. Still, it'd be fun to do a full-blown scene like this.

Had the same thought. Inkthinker, you should send this stuff to the makers of naruto, LOL!
But, seriously, with this kind of skill, I bet you can get a job anywhere in the world.

o yea. inkthinker's shorts are reminiscent of those dynamic movements found in cartoons like naruto, dragonball, yuyu hakusho, G Gundam, and others alike. He's really sitting on a goldmine with these ideas

CHRIST. this is so badass. something about the sense of movement... you should animate for fighting games!

Nah. Those guys get paid bupkis.
I really would like to animate fighting action for TV or film, but it doesn't seem to be something anyone wants to pay me to do, and so I kinda have to put off the fun I have animating this kinda stuff in order to make a nickel and pay the rent.
But if I could, man, I'd totally make a fighting anime that would kick ass clear through the top of the head.

At first I thought it was more then 80 frames, do you do it on 2's?

Inkthinker In reply to Nanaki7 [2007-02-23 08:34:35 +0000 UTC]
Always! There are selected frames on ones, but I animate on twos as much for most everything.

So do you do key frames first (like 1-5-9 etc) and then inbetween, or do you go straight through?

Inkthinker In reply to Nanaki7 [2007-02-23 08:56:28 +0000 UTC]
Both, but most often I key first. More often than not when I use Easytoon I'm never sure how many tweens I'll need... I just ballpark it and then add/remove as necessary according to playback. But on the average I throw down key or a breakdown ever 3-7 frames.

Pfft. There's a trick.
You could do it, dude. You're digital, and your drawing skills are there. You just have to practice to learn timing.
Oh, any you have to be willing to draw largely the same thing again and again from every concievable angle.

I'm having some trouble with the key points and as well filling in areas. How do you do that with all the dots?
The key points I sometimes don't know when to do few steps and when to do more. Like I'll put in way to many frames from one point to another, and it'll end up looking to slow, maybe it's in the way that the movement is drawn? not sure.

Yeah, picking out keys is all about timing, and timing is at the very heart of animation. Practice makes it easier, as over time you gain a sense in your head of what exactly 1/15 to 1/30 of a second will look like. I can actually pick out individual frames of animation when I watch TV now (and THAT was a weird transition, I don't mind telling you). I oughtta try playing some of the old frame-specific fighting games again.
Here's a good rule of thumb: if you go more than 3 frames, there should probably be a keyframe or a breakdown. "Keyframes" are those... well, key frames, the key moment that defines the action. A "breakdown" is a sort of lesser key... it follows the action between two keys, but also fills it out.
So for instance, in a walk cycle you might set the keyframes to fall on the points where both feet are touching the ground, but the breakdown would go to the point where a person is halfway through the step... one foot firmly down, the other foot up at the halfway point in mid-air. Then you tween betwixt the keys and the breakdown as needed to establish timing (guesstimate 2-5 tween frames from key to breakdown to key, for a total of 5-9 frames per step).
It's hard to do timing wrong per se... even unintended timing can look good. The task is in learning to control it.
If you really want to learn to animate, even loosely, then Richard Williams book The Animator's Survival Kit is a very visual, thorough guide to the craft.

I hadn't seen that... it's very neat.
In some respects I am working on "my own show", being the lead animator for HTF Studios I have a couple of projects on the burner all the time. At least one of them (Joe is Japanese has begun appearing online in small bits, and I animated large chunks of a short film that just went to Slamdance and is headed to the SxSW film festival next. But I can't talk about my work in public, because it risks violating non-disclosure rules, so I rarely mention those projects here.
Though it's not really fair to call those "MY" own shows... I'm responsible for a lot of the visual result, but it's not all under my control, so it's not entirely my own. At the same time, I have about as much input into those works as any other animator gets, unless they're Hayao Miyazaki.
I'd like to do something that was entirely my own, someday, but these darn bills keep piling up.

Was there a rain of arrows in one of the Animatrix films?
I was thinking more of the ones in Hero and 300 while I was on it, but it's been done in anime more than once before.

How do you get them so clean? I can't get proper motion down without drawing the messiest sketches.

Inkthinker In reply to AkiraShimada [2007-02-23 09:08:09 +0000 UTC]
I do a lot of messy sketching.
The thing here is, there's not a lot of detail, and I'm cheating a good bit by making the ninja a silhouette. And if you looked at the individual frames, you'd see that the arrows are pretty rough... they're just never on long enough to notice.
