Description Here is my first wire wrapping tutorial!

This tutorial is meant to give people a first step towards advanced wire wrapping, which is why I call it a 'beginner advanced tutuoral'.

I certainly didn't get results like this my first try, so don't get discouraged if wires aren't lining up for you, or are bending in a different direction than you hoped! Sometimes you have to follow the wires, even if you end up with a different design than you had in mind.

If you do make something with this tutorial, please leave a link in the comments - I would love to see what you come up with!

Here is a finished photo of the piece I made in this tutorial: [link]

Looking for a store that sells square and half-round wire? Here's where I shop:

Gold filled, Argentium and sterling silver, and silver filled
Antiqued brass and coated coppers
Brass and copper

--------------------
If you like wearing this style of jewelry but you don't like making it personally, I do sell my jewelry at my etsy store, and I take commisions

Wrap on!

Lovely! I'd love to see the next inset of this. It seems like there's more intricate things that you could put in a short tut as well, but even if you'd rather not this is great. Thanks!

Do you think this will work with a heart-shaped stone? *-*

innerdiameter In reply to cloudylicious [2012-02-28 18:31:53 +0000 UTC]

It sure does! It's more difficult because there are more curves to match the wire to, but it certainly works. I haven't done one myself, but I found one that someone else did with a similar style: [link]

Are there any online stores you can recommend for buying supplies?

I'm looking to get into the hobby, and need to get a good price on all the tools and materials I'll need.

innerdiameter In reply to cynicalasshole [2011-06-28 05:08:33 +0000 UTC]

i don't have a suggestion for pliers stores - you just want to make sure that they are smooth, not grooved.

here's the three shops that i use for wire (all of them carry half-round and square):

parawire.com - antiqued brass and coated copper (their half-round wire is difficult to work with)
brandywinejewelrysupply.com - brass and copper
gsgold.com - sterling silver, argentium sterling silver, and gold filled wire ($25 minimum purchase)

all three of those websites are difficult to navigate, but they are the best deals i've found.

I wish I had square wire... I can only buy round wire here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

innerdiameter In reply to oasiaris [2011-05-24 19:34:25 +0000 UTC]

I don't know any local shops that sell square wire - I get all of mine from online.
I also don't know European shops, but here are the sites I'd recommend for wire:

silver and gold filled - gsgold.com (25USD minimum purchase)
antiqued brass and copper - parawire.com
brass and copper - brandywinejewelrysupply.com

If you're interested in trying this style, I would really recommend square and half round wire. It's so much easier and friendlier than round wire.

oasiaris In reply to innerdiameter [2011-05-24 20:06:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Those links are so useful!

I've tried something like this with round wire, but I didn't like the result very much.

What gauge and hardness do you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

innerdiameter In reply to oasiaris [2011-05-24 20:32:59 +0000 UTC]

For smaller and lighter pieces, I use 24ga, and for larger, 22ga. I use either 22 or 20ga half round, depending on the style I'm going for.

All of the silver is dead soft. There's some half hard available on ebay, but it was not very fun to work with.

oasiaris In reply to innerdiameter [2011-05-25 10:30:11 +0000 UTC]

Okay, thanks!
The wire I'm now using is pretty hard, and I guess dead soft wire would be much more easy to work with.

You're off to a good start! You would probably have an easier time if you used square wire, but it's difficult to find. (I buy mine online because no stores nearby have it.)

Darkrose42 In reply to ??? [2011-03-31 17:56:22 +0000 UTC]

I used your tutorial, but with a different stone. It has the form of a drop. I also used the same wire for everything. Here is the result: [link]

It was the first time in my life I ever put hands on wire to make jewellry. I think it was fun

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

innerdiameter In reply to Darkrose42 [2011-04-01 02:31:46 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! It's probably a lot more challenging to use this style with round wire - the square and half-round don't slip around as easily.

I'm glad you liked it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Darkrose42 In reply to innerdiameter [2011-04-04 17:22:58 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry, I forgot to add the link to your tutorial. Fixed that

I wanted to start with the first wire I had at home, so I used this one. I can imagine that it would be easier with square wire. Maybe I'll buy some.

I had problems to tie up the wire tightly. I don't know why, when I held it in one hand it always bended. But I'm sure it gets easier with some practise

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

innerdiameter In reply to Darkrose42 [2011-04-14 04:11:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the reference!

Controlling the wire definitely gets easier with practice. When I started, my wraps would slip around and bend funny and I would leave big marks with my pliers. Also, some metals are easier to work with than others. Each one has its own personality!
