Description
Here is my first wire wrapping tutorial! This tutorial is meant to give people a first step towards advanced wire wrapping, which is why I call it a 'beginner advanced tutuoral'.
I certainly didn't get results like this my first try, so don't get discouraged if wires aren't lining up for you, or are bending in a different direction than you hoped! Sometimes you have to follow the wires, even if you end up with a different design than you had in mind.
If you do make something with this tutorial, please leave a link in the comments - I would love to see what you come up with!
Here is a finished photo of the piece I made in this tutorial: [link]

Looking for a store that sells square and half-round wire? Here's where I shop:
Gold filled, Argentium and sterling silver, and silver filled
Antiqued brass and coated coppers
Brass and copper
--------------------
If you like wearing this style of jewelry but you don't like making it personally, I do sell my jewelry at my etsy store, and I take commisions
Wrap on!

I made some more pendants meanwhile. I really try to control the wire more, but it's still not easy . That's true, I bought some different wire (copper and only plated with silver) and it's really different.
But I have a problem. How do you secure the ends of the wire at the back of the pendant?

Do you mean securing the wires that you bend around back in step 13?
With some types of wire, those will hold on their own. One little step that I forgot to show in the tutorial is that you can loop the wires like I show, and then carefully tuck them under that (horizontal, in step 13) single wire that's helping hold the stone in. If you're feeling fancier, it's possible to actually loop them around the support wire, so that they won't shift around at all. Luckily, it's the back of the pendant, so you can practice a little without destroying your pendant

Thank you, that's exactly what I meant. It worked, now the wire won't bend (I hope so). I'm still practising . But when I try to bend one thinner wire around some pieces of bigger wire it's always a bit loose, I can still move it around a bit. Difficult to explain... I mean step 3, I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I think that if you use half-round and square wire instead of round, the wires will lie flatter against each other better. There isn't really a trick to getting round wire to act in such a secure way because the four round wires want to bunch up rather than lying side by side.

I found only one source for half-round wire so far and it would be 925 silver with copper, 70 cent for 1 cm. I don't know, but that sounds extremely expensive to me. I would love to buy other wire, but it's difficult here to find a online shop that's not too far away. I don't like high delivery costs.
But what I like most about wire wrapping is the coiling. That's my favourite style and I want to learn more about it. For this I think round wire will be enough for the next time

I can't seem to find the right kind of wire... I bought 22 gauge completely-round wire, and it isn't going terribly well. I can't seem to get the wire straightened and then keep it aligned. Any suggestions? Probably get the right wire, huh?
Thanks,
Lori

innerdiameter In reply to typhoid-lori [2010-11-29 19:22:22 +0000 UTC]
My first suggestion would be to try with square wire - several wires lay flat against each other so much easier than with round wire and the half-round wire hold more tightly than round on round. Also, I have my wires pretty straight in the tutorial, but you can leave them more curvy if you're pulling them off of a coil or spool. As long as the four wires are following nearly the same curve, they should be fine to work with. You're going to curve the wires in later steps anyways.

hi, here's the result of me following your (very clearly and nicely done for the total newbie i am) tutorial!
[link]
it isn't the same because i made it by memory, and with the only material i have (gross square clamp and round wire...), and i like gross minerals.
i have to practice a lot, but i enjoyed doing this very much and will do it again. i would never have tried without this tuto, so thanx a lot!

that looks like a great start! it's a lot easier to control the square wire, and some nicer pliers won't leave those little nicks
picking finished or unfinished stones is totally a style choice, they're both beautiful.
