Description Here is my first wire wrapping tutorial!

This tutorial is meant to give people a first step towards advanced wire wrapping, which is why I call it a 'beginner advanced tutuoral'.

I certainly didn't get results like this my first try, so don't get discouraged if wires aren't lining up for you, or are bending in a different direction than you hoped! Sometimes you have to follow the wires, even if you end up with a different design than you had in mind.

If you do make something with this tutorial, please leave a link in the comments - I would love to see what you come up with!

Here is a finished photo of the piece I made in this tutorial: [link]

Looking for a store that sells square and half-round wire? Here's where I shop:

Gold filled, Argentium and sterling silver, and silver filled
Antiqued brass and coated coppers
Brass and copper

If you like wearing this style of jewelry but you don't like making it personally, I do sell my jewelry at my etsy store, and I take commisions

Wrap on!

Thank you for this tutorial! I've not done much wire wrapping, but I will definitely br trying out this method in the future once I am more comfortable with wrapping in general! Faved!

You're welcome!

I've found the best way to learn wire wrapping is to try things and make mistakes (and then put your successes on dA )

I've done a small bit of simple wire wrapping and have always looked for tutorials to do it similar to your method and could never find one that was easy to understand. I'm glad that you've shared this!

this will help me when i make my pendant. i have a artificial Indian spirit guide stone so I'm making it into a necklace without damaging or putting a hole through it.

you should share your pendant when you're done

Very beautiful. I have once seen such a tutorial in a book and tried it but absolutely failed (had the wrong materials and no good tools). XD Maybe I should try it again now. Thank you very much!

innerdiameter In reply to Arahiriel [2010-08-19 18:24:15 +0000 UTC]

you should try again! a decent set of pliers and square/half round wire make a huge difference

Arahiriel In reply to innerdiameter [2010-08-19 18:27:28 +0000 UTC]

I really believe that the right material really makes a huge difference! I will search for the right wires next time I am shopping! Hope to find some nice things to give it a try once more! Thank you!

It sure does! I would recommend trying to find square wire online… I've never seen it in craft or jewelry stores.

Ah ok, thank you for the tipp! I also never saw square wire in any store – but just thought I was blind. XD So now I know where to search. Thanks.

Great tutorial! Also, I think some good flush cutters like these [link] would make your life a lot easier, in terms of not having to file the ends much

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

innerdiameter In reply to KubusRubus [2010-07-19 23:47:27 +0000 UTC]

I've already got a pair of those, but the wire is still rough enough to catch on skin with them. I also have some other bail tricks that I don't divulge in this tutorial

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KubusRubus In reply to innerdiameter [2010-07-20 03:06:38 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they definitely don't do the whole job for you but at least there's no bevel. Hehe of course, those you save for paid tutorials or just keep... forever!

Solameya In reply to ??? [2010-07-14 16:53:13 +0000 UTC]

What the heck do you use to get your wires straight and lined up for the wrapping? Mine are going like, every direction under the sun xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

innerdiameter In reply to Solameya [2010-07-14 17:12:40 +0000 UTC]

You don't have to have the 4 square wires exactly flat to start out with. In step 1, I didn't try straightening the wires at all. With square wire, it's easy enough to match up the 4 wires in the middle, though their ends might go different ways.

I only straightened the square wires out some in step 4, after they were already secured together. (They don't even need to be straightened out then, because I just curve them around the stone after that.)

This tutorial is almost as wonderful as the resulting piece of jewelry. Thank you so much for putting this together, I've been searching the interwebs for good jewelry making tutorials for a while and this is the most helpful (and it also looks like the most feasible, at least for a beginner like me ).

I hope you get a chance to try it out! Square wire isn't the easiest to come by in stores, but there's lots of shops online.

Hi! Just wanted to let you know that I managed to learn some things from you, with this (Awesome!) tutorial. I swear, you infected me with this style and now I prefer it to most styles I've used in the past.

Nope, still nowhere as neat as the way you do it, though! XD

Great! I'm glad you're having fun with with this style. I've tried a few others, but I've kept coming back to this style (as you can tell by my gallery ).

On thing I like about the style is, there's so much room for creativity and everyone tries different things with it

Thank you so much for this tutorial!!! It will help a lot once I get the wire and start working with a small turquoise cab that I bought myself a couple years ago. For some odd reason the logistics of wire wrapping it was not coming to me.
So thanks again for this; now I can't wait to get started.

This was very helpful! I can't wait to play around with wire wrapping! But I have one question: What is the hardness of the wire? Is it dead soft?

I use dead soft wire - I was pretty sure I'd forgotten something important

You really do go trhough a lot of wire!

Why do use diagonal cutters, btw? DO they work better with the square or something?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

innerdiameter In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2010-05-26 06:48:02 +0000 UTC]

diagonal cutters can cut closer to the piece, and can get into smaller spaces to trim than other cutters I've used.

I guess it doesn't seem like a lot of wire to me because this is the method I've been working with all along.

magpiesmiscellany In reply to innerdiameter [2010-05-26 14:33:47 +0000 UTC]

Mind, I doubt I'll ever get over my utter inability to work with square wire, but This looks great and I think I'll have to take a quick vacation from herringbone to try it out.
