Description Not much history regarding the show but I did watch the theme song and a few clips before its first initial airing on Cartoon Network. Thanks to the network's See it First (which I think is a negative because it's affecting their ratings big time), I watched the first 2 episodes before it aired, making it the first time I watched the show's episodes before its first airing since OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes.

Yeesh, that doesn't look like a good pie chart at all. Despite being a new series, there was only one episode I liked but at least that was from the newer premieres when this show went back on track. To make matters worse, there are many episodes I don't recommend at all. Even two vile episodes are bound to make things worse with the bad episodes counting. This causes the unrecommendable episodes to take up more than half of the pie chart. If the show was that consistent in quality, it would continue to be mediocre.

Slice of life shows usually face issues with the writing, but not the characters:

So let's begin talking about the premise, which is...just your typical slice of life premise that lacks any sign of charm. Since it's mostly about fitting in with city surroundings, it still isn't interesting because there isn't that much originality put into the concept. Shows like The Loud House has an interesting concept that a few kids can relate to, but Apple and Onion simply have this idea about blending into city life that isn't interesting because it's just plain. But is it as plain as the writing itself? So far, yes. The writing managed to stay true to the bland premise and it results in boring episodes. Where's the boredom coming from? Most of these episodes are just dull and I can't take relatability as an excuse because this is a slice of life we're talking about and we're supposed to relate to almost any experience here. But the thing is, there are many episodes that feels like it's trying to be relatable but the end result makes it feel stupid and unnatural, whether if it's Onion being distracted a lot while trying to save Apple, who also has his distractive habits in Sausage & Sweetie Smash. Not only do plenty of the episodes bored me, but not tedious because otherwise the nature is way too peaceful and the formula lacks substance and huge amounts of predictability, they also tend to be predictable. I may be unaware of some things coming like Apple leaving his backpack at the ice cream truck in A New Life, which can also apply to some jokes too due to non-existent buildup and the pacing being too fast where it's easy to miss it, but you saw most of the structure coming because of how the characters behave or sometimes, plain cliched. But, there's one saving grace that can save me from the boring and generic slice of life stories and that's the humor! With its witty slapstick and unpredictability IS...also flat like the writing. The best jokes I got from the series only reached chuckle-worthy levels of funny. The reason for that is also due to the show's nature; it's dull and I sometimes forgot if they were supposed to be jokes. It can also step in the wrong direction as well whenever Apple and Onion tried to befriend someone in public, which comes out as creepy and awkward. This problem was at its worst in Apple's Formula where this is not only repetitive where it's obvious but seeing them do the same thing again to strangers is just unpleasant to watch. The only thing I seem to love the writing is when everything from the episode would soon lead up to the climax wherein the climax, it would usually rewind to scenes that contributed to the episode's structure and...by far a bunch of characters from the rising action would come together in the climax for Apple and Onion. But then again, that doesn't help much if the episodes feel way all-over-the-place where the beginning feels like a conflict, but then it starts to feel like a setup when it reaches the second act. Sorry about the "..."'s because I'm getting bored talking about the writing. This isn't really a breath of fresh air and instead some flat ideas for a slice of life.

I heard that people don't like the animation due to the character designs looking creepy. Too bad because...

...I agree with people criticizing the animation style due to it looking a tad creepy and a little too realistic, especially the faces on the female characters where they have the eyes shaped like a normal human being and lips to really indicate that they're actually female. Another thing I dislike from the faces is that I keep thinking that their mouths stay consistent with the mouth drawn to look like you're saying "Hmp". But aside from that, I do find some of the characters designs creative and like Wishfart, it mixes real life with objects. One example would be Burger because the crew used the patty of the character and used it as a shirt, which is a clever fit to one of the characters. There are more characters that are like that such as Hot Dog and Pizza who not only have that but moves like their designated object. But on the other hand, they look ugly, ESPECIALLY Onion where I can't even tell if he's an onion or not because I end up getting confused with what object it's supposed to be. He is designed to resemble a scallion? What are his ears on top supposed to represent? And adding a green body underneath the scallion makes it more difficult to clarify the character. If he's supposed to look like a scallion, then better change his name to "Scallion" and let the show name be "Apple & Scallion". But aside from the confusing character designs, the character designs don't look very interesting to look at because all they are is just an object with limbs attached to them. Plain simple to capture the minimalist feeling of 2010s cartoons. Their character animations don't work either because sometimes, the limbs may be out of sync whenever the torso moves. And what about the backgrounds? They're still not convincing to look at because for a slice of life show called "Apple & Onion", I thought it'd be better for the design of the backgrounds to resemble food shapes, but all they are is just buildings with thin lines and some bits of vignette. That's all, just bland looking backgrounds with no touch added to them. One thing I can be positive about the quality is at least the jingles performed by Apple and Onion are bouncy and fun to listen to that help capture the target audience (in that case children) well. Like the writing, the quality is literally nothing. It's just objects with limbs attached to them in a dull looking city.

Don't tell me that the characters are next because you know the drill after you read the writing and quality sections:

Well, Apple and Onion are pretty witty and fun characters to sit through. Despite being uncomfortable and stalkerish often whenever they tried to befriend people that can make me cringe, not much is wrong with them. They're just dull with not much charm to them. But what makes them stronger is their bond, which kept the strength of Apple & Onion intact with the music and friendly attitude. But even with their high levels of friendship, it's still not interesting because they're the same friendly trio who is highly enthusiastic towards others. Sorry for the introduction, because I wanted to start with them first since they're the main focus of the show. But anyways, with bland personalities, none of the characters tend to surprise me. I mean, Apple and Onion have their moments, but I'm not really interested in learning about them due to their typical friendly attitude. Granted, there is development for most of these characters as well as some decent backstories for them, which is a good thing when you're trying to make a one-dimensional side character interesting. What I'm trying to say about the side characters is that they feel one dimensional that don't really have a lot of depth and if they get the spotlight in some episodes, they're mostly used as a plot device for Apple and Onion to get in awkward situations. Not all of them are like that such as Beef Jerky, but they don't tend to convince me in a way where I really want to know more about these characters. No creative characteristics, uninteresting backstories, not much is said about these characters. They're just not interesting enough.

After failing to impress me with its recent cartoons; OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes and Unikitty! (which is, by the way, the next scorecard in production order), I think Cartoon Network can't get a lot blander than this. This slice of life comedy brought me nothing that is worth watching. The interesting aspects in this show are viewed as nonexistent that finding positivity in the writing, quality, and characters is like waiting in a desert hoping something amazing will come out of it. It's still a harmless cartoon, but the ugliness of the animation and awkward moments can get to you. If Apple & Onion tend to crack more good episodes someday and continue that streak, maybe I'll change my mind and find it worth watching sometimes, but because that I found nothing outstanding about it, it rather stands off as a poor show (39%). However, the only remarkable thing I can describe this slice of life is that it's at least harmless. Not overly tedious or having any repugnant taste, it's chill and I don't find this show worth watching. Nothing was that surprising in this start of Cartoon Network's next era.

I didn't confirm one yet, so be patient with it. You commented twice about that and I would like to ask you to cease it.

Inadequate = Bad? But it's rating is better than the Bad rating

fyi, Inadequate is in the Bad range. Check out my cartoon ruler for that. There's a difference between the rating "Bad" and the "Bad" range (which ranges from Inadequate-Heinous)

Ah...........slice-of-life shows. You know, you're right. Now that I think about it..I probably know would you think of Hey Arnold! too. I actually think now that I see your points about slice-of-life shows, I think that I reviewed them the wrong way.
