Description
This show is another one of my childhood shows. I remember watching this cartoon during the Nood era (yet Cartoon Network thinks that rerunning a Cartoon Cartoon for 9 years after its cancellation is a good idea) and also when Cartoon Network rebranded into the Check It era. I have no clue what season I watched, but it ranges from season 1 to 3, yeah that's my estimate. Although this show wasn't my type, I still watched it because I kind of find it intriguing for me.This is the first time where I was actually on time on releasing the scorecard yet I made this scorecard on the same day. On this day, October 27 to be specific, I watched the last 4 episodes of the full series and The Fog of Courage around 10:20 am, then I started making the scorecard. How was I making the scorecard? Pretty good.
Okay, with no distractions, let's discuss the pie chart: The majority of the episodes are just good, almost dominating 40% of the show. With all of the greens and blues abound the pie chart, only 2 meh episodes lies within this show. Wait a minute, my review on Professor Squidward where I gave a hint about something from a show I hate. Well, you guys were probably panicking about my opinion on Courage the Cowardly Dog being around meh. Remember guys, that review has something to do with lying, and the hint tricked you guys as well. Since it's almost Halloween, this song perfectly describes the lie. But I digress, there are a total of 5 blessed episodes, although none of them are epic enough. However, the best episode of the show was pretty close to being epic, so I guess that's close enough. Not much else to describe the pie chart except it looks solid.
I may realize the praise Courage the Cowardly Dog got due to its supernatural setting and creative tone. Here's a writing review for you guys:
People must know that this show is pretty dark (if you look at the colors used for the title cards) and is occasionally funny. The premise here sounds really promising, especially the setting where the 1962 ranch house takes place in the middle of nowhere. The idea of a dog trying to defend his family from scary activities roaming around the place is really interesting and I was hoping that the show would rank a divine. How did it translate into the show's writing? It wasn't what I expected it to be, but it's pretty good. The writing's still great, but it does carry some problems. First off, I love the tone that shifts through the episode to bring up the suspense, which keeps me engaged throughout the episode. Also, there's a bunch of creative effort thrown into every episode you seek mostly because this show is dark and takes place in the middle of nowhere, and they're executed into something unique thanks to the villains. Creativity must be sworn throughout the show's run to make this show charming to watch, especially the settings are the bullseye of Courage the Cowardly Dog's positivity. They're rather cool looking and their description makes them even more imaginative and interesting that you'd want to visit that place some time in the future. Now let's get to the cons, which are pretty big here. First off, a lot of episodes later on can rehash other episodes or simply use cliches to tell its story. While they can execute it in a unique way, a few rather does nothing with it like if it's trying to fill the season up to 13 episodes. What makes me irritated about the writing is that I keep getting the same Muriel gets kidnapped scenario again and again where it gets really old fast. That's just an example about the writing's repetition. Plus, there are a few episodes (the weakest episodes of Courage the Cowardly Dog) that feel rather all over the place, but mostly fine episodes. You see, Courage the Cowardly Dog first aired in 1999, which at that time writing starts to advance more into creativity. Courage does follow the trend, but also utilizes cliches to tell some of its stories. That goes for a fan favorite of many people, Last of the Starmakers, where it's cliched, but it executes it correctly. Blandness also abounds a few episodes, but definitely not all of them are bland. For a cartoon from 1999, this is some unique storytelling that can also be repetitious.
Repetition is what struck Courage the Cowardly Dog to be weaker, but better than most of the Cartoon Cartoons released back then. That also goes for its animation:
What can I say about Courage the Cowardly Dog's animation? It's also the same qualities as the writing where it's creative and pleasant to look at, but it can face with some problems. The character designs here are awesome, especially the villains because they show a design that fits their personality. The villains here are the more interesting to look at due to how menacing they look at while also look like something silly yet harmful. The designs here fit the tone of the show well and describes how dark Courage the Cowardly Dog can get with the villains. And I gotta say this, the characters move smoothly and slightly realistically. These are some character designs that differ from most Cartoon Cartoon shows that around this time, animation is starting to develop more unique animation styles rather than the typical Hanna-Barbera signature 90's animation. How about the colors? Pretty nice to look at, even if they can be dark, they still fit with the show's theme nicely. Then there's the settings which are also cool looking and creative looking that also presents a description for the setting while also sending us more silly designs that are also kind of menacing. The settings are awesome, especially when you see them visually. Not all of the animation is that good. Courage the Cowardly Dog feels more of a cartoon from the 2000s, and what does that have to do with the animation? I kind of worry that the animation here feels pretty typical for the 2000s, but this show tries hard to present its animation style more uniquely and not like something that's just an obvious product of the 2000s. The menacing tone makes the animation feel typical for the 2000s. Let's not forget about the CGi used in Courage the Cowardly Dog because I can tell the animators tried, but like most cartoons, they don't usually blend well with the backgrounds and I think it's better for them to be traditionally animated like the character designs. But wait a minute, a few characters (like King Ramses) are computer animated. Well, it's a lot better when the "you're not perfect" scene is shown in 100% CGi because at least I don't have to worry about cheap CGi in a traditionally animated background. The background music? They also fit with the show's theme nicely, but it baffles me that they're also repetitious as the writing itself because they play the crisis theme in pretty much every episode. Couldn't the composers compose more songs for Courage the Cowardly Dog rather than edit the episode to add the same background music over and over again? Well, they did write plenty of background music, but we only get to hear them in one episode. While the animation can be typical, face out-of-place CGi and repetitous background music, most of the quality blends really well with the show's theme.
Annoyed by all those solid reviews? The characters spiffy up the show some more:
The characters here are quite lovable, strong and interesting. Sure, a few of them can get on my nerves like Muriel, Eustace and Di Lung, but the characterization here works, also contributing to the show's dark theme. Almost all of them are given depth to show their young versions, a brief description about them, great use of development, and a nice goal that all adds up to them to make the characters I want. The villains here are like last sentence, except they're more than that; not just villains, but also present catchphrases that are catchy to my ears and show great use of that formula. A lot of these characters are unforgettable and interesting while trying not to feel generic. The only character I pretty much dislike is the general that appears in a few episodes because he's rather pointless and when he appears in some episodes, I thought that he's going to save the day but instead, I feel he's here to entertain us some more and take a break whenever the writing gets boring. He doesn't show that much of a purpose of the show, but in at least one episode, he can play a role. All of these characters are different in a more unique and excellent way that makes them pretty memorable.
After various comedy-based cartoons, Courage the Cowardly Dog showed that Cartoon Cartoons aren't just silly cartoons; they're something more than that. With the dark tone taking in place, the writing, quality and character put their focus on the theme very well as well as slapping some creativity on the way. Sure, it can be repetitious sometimes but this was overall a fun ride. It's a good show (78%) and probably one of the best Cartoon Cartoons out there. If you've been following the release dates for my scorecards, you may notice something that we got the first 3 scorecards of the Friday premieres that all goes along with their rating. I'll be expecting more good shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog to stick around.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're 1% of the population that have a negative opinion on Ed, Edd n Eddy.
But hey, good scorecard!

Man you really tricked me. I thought you were gonna hate this show.
Sucks that you probably aren't a big fan of Ed, Edd n Eddy but it's not the end of the world if you do. As for Courage, it was a show that I used to watch a lot as a kid along with my dad, who thought this and Tom and Jerry were the best cartoons he has ever seen. My brother and mother also really loved this show. I like the show too, but not as much as some other cartoons.
It's interesting that in the US they showed reruns of the show for so many years. Here in Romania they removed the show in late 2007, then brought it back in 2013 and showed reruns of it till the middle of 2014.
Funny thing is I never found this show scary at all. I hear a lot of people saying how King Ramses and Freaky Fred were scary, but I never found them scary in the slightest.
I do wonder though, between Cow and Chicken and I am Weasel, which one do you think is better?

I'll honestly get a bad feeling while releasing that scorecard to DeviantArt on Thanksgiving week. It will trigger dozens of Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy fans.
