Description
I've seen a variety of people confessing that Fanboy and Chum Chum is one of their childhood shows. As for me, I didn't really watch the cartoon, but I did heard of it when the show reached its peak in popularity. Nothing much I know about the cartoon, I didn't even know if I watched an episode of the show back then.It took me an entire week (which I was expecting to finish the series by the time I left my mom's house), but since I had a lot of activities to do at Dallas, I didn't get to finish the show on time. However, I at least completed the scorecard before my first day of school began (I only had 3 days at my school until I left it because it was familiar with my last school year, and now I'm going to a new school on August 28, 2017).
Unfortunately, this is not a good cartoon. I'd hate to be predictable, but Fanboy and Chum Chum got way too many issues of its own with pretty much everything. Let's take a look at the pie chart first; It appears that there's only 1 great episode and 9 good episodes in total. However, that amount cannot compete with the amount of bad and damned episodes (36 BAD EPISODES!?). Regardless to say that almost 35% of the show is mediocre, I was rather distracted while making this scorecard. That's right, my attention deficit has returned to ruin my cartoon reviewing. I at least tried my best to be honest. Anyways, with that amount of mediocre and meh, it's easy to say that Fanboy and Chum Chum is a bland show.
There is one thing that contributes to the blandness of Fanboy and Chum Chum, and that's the writing:
Before I critique on the writing, I'd like to let you guys know that at the time Fanboy and Chum Chum first aired, Nickelodeon started to loose its quality content and rather become more of the SpongeBob network. That's why from 2008 to the early 2010's, you'll see a lot of SpongeBob rip-offs, and Fanboy and Chum Chum is one of them. Not only that, but Fanboy and Chum Chum is possibly one of the biggest SpongeBob SquarePants rip offs created by Nickelodeon. The premise is nevertheless dull and easily something for a Canadian cartoon. But is the writing that bad? Well, a little, yeah. I'd like to talk about the positives first because there is so many things wrong with the writing. First off, some episodes are relatable (which is why episodes like Separation Anxiety are that good to me) while others are also interesting as well, whether if they're exaggerated or something silly for Fanboy and Chum Chum. However, those pros aren't saying much, because a small fraction of the show is interesting, while a lot of the portion is dull crap. Many of them are rather predictable, illogical or doesn't have a stable focus. Because that Fanboy and Chum Chum are kids in this show while some others are bullies, there can be a few episodes where the status of the characters are unknown, meaning I don't even know who to root for. We also got a few episodes where the episode decides to stop and not have an ending. Why should the writers forget a structure and rather like to work with the humor?
Speaking of that, I'll be talking about the humor here. It's juvenile slapstick that can be annoying sometimes, but they can work sometimes. The worst thing about them are when fart jokes are thrown into an episode to try and get the children demographic attention because y'know, kids LIKE fart jokes, so why not a cartoon be filled with fart jokes, eh???? Not all episodes have fart jokes (thank god), but also for some episode, they aren't even funny to begin with. Out of pretty much every episode, they're rather cliche and generic crap that no one even cares! Oh, and because this is a SpongeBob rip off, there are also some episodes that feel SpongeBob-esque or have no substance whatsoever.
You see, very mediocre writing. The animation is like an anchor where it's heavy, thus the rating for it is worse:
While it's not as bad as The Problem Solverz' hideous and LSD-induced animation, the quality is still loud and ugly to begin with. The quality here feels like it was from a Wii game, and heck, even the effects and textures look rather fake as well. I don't know if Fanboy and Chum Chum has professional animators, but by looking at the quality, they don't even know how to make GOOD LOOKING CHARACTER DESIGNS!! The character designs are the worst thing about the quality because not only are their pupils too small, but their eyeballs are too big where I already know that this is a cartoon already, so why don't we do some experiments with the designs? Even worse is that the animation is in god for saken CGi! Why can't they do it in 2d animation, it looks better that way and heck, the pilot's 2D animation looks good as it is. Now, who was the one who gave the idea of Fanboy and Chum Chum being in 3D? I'm not going to bash them, but next time, you need to think about what you're doing, imagine your cartoon being in 3D and think if it's a good or bad idea. Seriously, you're going to leave some god-awful character designs on your way. Anyways, the animation isn't awful, because it's child friendly and the colors are decent, but with the idea of Fanboy and Chum Chum being animated in CGi and the butt-ugly character designs, the quality is rather unpleasant.
First off, mediocre writing. Second, ugly but child friendly animation. Third, dull characters:
Almost all of the characters here are forgettable and bland. We don't even know more about them (aside from characters like Man-Arctica and Kyle), thus making us one-dimensional characters. Well, at least a few characters have goals to come in mind. Like what I said in the writing, this show's very similar to SpongeBob SquarePants, so why not the characters be like the phenomenal cast of SpongeBob? You get Fanboy as SpongeBob, Chum Chum as Patrick, any antagonist (especially Kyle) as Squidward, etc.. If this used to be the state that Nick shows go through, a formula that makes look like SpongeBob clones, then this is just shameful for Nickelodeon. I couldn't think of one character that either interesting or original, because the most original characters of Fanboy are just parodies of popular characters from famous movies. I'll say this, but I think Fanboy and Chum Chum relies on pop culture references, and while a few of them work, they're still flat characters that I can easily forget because they aren't even that interesting enough. Oh, and also, some characters are shoehorned into an episode just for variety or because it needs more screen-time. I think this has some of the most forgettable characters I've seen since Bunsen is a Beast and they're just dull-SpongeBob rip-offs.
Fanboy and Chum Chum wasn't even interesting to begin with because it's mostly just SpongeBob SquarePants, except the characters aren't memorable, the writing is broken and the idea of the cartoon being 3D resulted in ugly character designs and cheap Wii backgrounds. This is a very mediocre show, but even with that, the jokes are just okay and even some episodes are interesting or relatable. Overall, this was close to poor, but it's just weak (40%) to me. If you imagine this formula returning to the future Nickelodeon, I'd rather not watch the network anymore because it doesn't have that much quality content, even in the present day their newer shows aren't that attractive to me. Only one show can make me interested and give more faith to the network, and that's Welcome to the Wayne.
