Description
Please excuse my lack of skill to think up of a better title~I think this was the longest it's taken me to finish a painting, around 4-5 days... Well, that's 4-5 days counting the days when I can actually paint. It's also the largest canvas I've worked on, so it took some time to save everytime I hit CTRL+S xD The size is 100x80 inches~
This was also a shot at improving my perspective, because I've seen that's something my art is lacking.
Last week of summer! Best to do as many paintings as I can...
Special thanks to for the stones picture references! <3
Brushes found here: as well as a standarb round brush and chalk brush in photoshop~

Reminds me of My Neighbor Totoro.
But it's like a mix of something out in the universe, Asian, and Western.Β I don't know if that makes sense, but your tree looks like warm home to live in.

this is like going on vacation where you need a week to see all the sights. i really love all of it, and at first was captivated by the lights on in the tree. but the waterfall on the left soon stole my attention. i would have imagined this was an accompaniment for a full-length story, but see no mention of that, so, really? no story with this? how cool it would be to live in that tree, if it had internet...

This was just an idea that came to mind, and I had an urge to paint it out. It might become a setting for one of my novels, though

Goodness, this looks great! I really feel drawn to this because its a different subject, and a whole new palette of colors here! The subtle usage of lighting from the moon and lanterns gives a very warm vibe to the veiwer, and i can see your attention and foucous to this artwork. Its great that youve branched out to larger canvasses, its just another step to improvement!

Aww, thanks Karly~
Yeah the average size canvas for an illustrator/concept artist is around 200 inches, but I'm gonna stick with what my laptop can handle xDDD

Hm cool! Β With my fam and their expectations, im starting to plunge into the medium that i fear above all
TRADITIONALS.
they all say that the type of colleges that im interested in use both digital and traditional mediums. Its kinda funny watching me paint traditional; in the lower left hand corner of my canvas there is always a blob of different colored dots from when i forgot i wasnt painting digital and subcouncoiusly tried to press the undo button! I started wierd, i went from notebook sfribbles to a bit of charcoal and straight to digital~ whoops. Also i think my parents secretly dont think ill be able to be a character desinger/storyboard artist, and instead think ill move to the beach or something and sell my trad. Art there, since apparently digital art, asfar as they know, wont sell in any gallery.
Yea but the great thing with concept art, especially for video games, its ALL digital. As far as i know~Β

Ugh, I hate traditional ;_; Well it's not necessarily HATE, but traditional is a medium that I've abandoned long ago xD Selling traditional art by the beach isn't really a way to make a living, sorry to say. Because that's what's called freelancing, and it's one of the most riskiest types of careers. You're much better off being a storyboard or character artist, where you get a weekly salary, and the prices can go higher, whereas selling art to random people, you never know how much will actually buy your art. Plus, you'll be having a lot of fun doing what you love and making money off it!
Digital Art is the medium that everybody wants now. There aren't many careers out there that support traditional, except for making money on your own, which is stressful.

This is quite interesting to look at, so much going on! This piece feels like it has a life of its own which is probably brought out by the lights in the tree indicating civilisation. I also really like the mistiness from the waterfall and surrounding the body of water, it gives the piece some energy.
I'm no expert in night time paintings but I think the tree and the other landscape features could really benefit from highlights around their outlines which would indicating backlighting from the moon. Especially for the tree I think it would help to make it pop out more.
Overall, good stuff!

Hey thanks for the critique!
Yeah I attempted to bring some backlighting to the tree, but I guess it was too subtle Backlighting always makes me nervous for some reason, haha. Thanks for letting me know! Now I know what to work on improving

Ah I'm the same when it comes to drawing realistic people - I get nervous about getting the features wonky and stuff XDΒ
Yeah my advice is to just go all out and have fun with i! Do some bold lines for the backlighting and see if you like it...if not, make it less harsh etc.

Yay! The main point of art is not only to express yourself, but to also have fun experimenting and such ^^

Great work! Still need some experimentation with better shading and lighting, and omni reflections (Study real photographs for hints). You worked hard on this one! The cartoon feel is great and could also be done with more washed out colors and with some natural brown/green/blacks with blue tints for the nightshading. So much great things you painted, this is awesome!
Thank you for sharing!
