Although I REALLY HAVE messed up the colouring on the piece i'm currently doing which is all the more annoying cos it's a portrait of comic genius Alan Moore!!! Rargh!

Hmm... I dunno, the colour doesn't look off to me. Bear in mind that all it'd take is 5 mins of masking and 10 mins of playing around with hue/saturation and colour balance to get the colours looking how you want

creating and saving selections for each portion of the image usinglg things like the magic wand and the lasoo tool and stuff... saved selections appear as channels and are easily re-selectable, so they're invaluable for playing round with colours.

ah, okay... well, you can probably look up selections and masking in the tutorials and help files, and there'll be a much better explanation than I can give with examples.
That sort of thing would be invaluable for your work, since it's quick and allows you to change the hues of your work on a detailed level. That way you can compensate for poor scans and get the vibrancy of the colours and textures back to what they are pre-scan

The colour's great! What is it you don't like? I think the white background makes the darker stuff pop in a pleasing manner.
