Description
A digital lineart tutorial I created for use in Photoshop. Theoretically it could be carried over into Painter, but would work better in Photoshop.I used Photoshop CS2 for this, but I would assume that the version generally does not matter as long as it is relatively new.
You WILL need a tablet for this tutorial. There is no way around it. Wacom makes the best tablets, most off-brands break easily. I used an 9x12 Intuos 3 Wacom tablet, however a 6x8 is just as good. However, a 4x5 tablet is too small and out of scale with your screen. Steer away from them, but it is better than nothing.
I will add an FAQ if it is really needed.

It might be a stupid question, but... are you draw your lines with free hands? Because my hands are quite shaking (too much coffee... -.-") and my linearts turn out messy every time I try to draw it on my own. I searched for tutorials about making linearts, others make it with the pen tool, but I just don't understand how they can use it. :/ So is there hope? xD Or I have to start become friends with that pen tool.

I use a Wacom tablet and basically act as if my monitor is my sketchpad. Also makes it much easier to fix mistakes as you go.

How do you do straight or long curvy lines? How to get them clean and smooth?

It is not a question for me, but maybe I can help It may be a problem not with your hands but with 1. tablet, 2. brush settings (do you remember to set spacing to 0%?). Also, maybe try drawing lines in SAI. I don't do many linearts, just for practice, but I find out that SAI lets you draw somehow smoother lines than Photoshop.

Well, I can't remember, but next time I'll start trying, I'll look at that option. I try to make the lineart by tutorials, so I think it wasn't the settings...
It's a little bit frustrating that I make a quite good pic on paper, then I just can't work it out the way I'd like to.
Thanks, I'll try out SAI.

This is a wonderful tutorial. Figuring out how to do lineart digitally (I use GIMP) has always been a humongous stumbling block for me, never quite finding something that FELT right. I've never before found such a detailed tutorial without the use of too much digital jargon. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this!

Excellent tutorial, I've just started to learn how to do things digitally...my question is how do you get such clean, straight lines. I haven't managed to do it digitally Maybe I'm more of a traditional art person, ionno.

I just got CS2 (hehehe...) and I'm waiting for my Wacom Bamboo One to come through the post - but when I choose brushes in it I cannot see the tapered one that is thicker in the middle as pictured in your tutorial. Can someone help me out?

This is great, thanks so much for thus tutorial!
God knows, i will use it
I have one question though,
when you are all done with your lineart (let's say it's about 2000px x 3000px *so about 600dpi*) how do you resize it?
In photoshop you get a few choices, and i seem to always resize to about 600/800px in billiniar mode.
That makes the lines very edgy, thick and way to sharp. Is there a way to save and make them smooth, but not blurry?
It would help me *so so* much!
Thank you none the less, amazing tutorial!
