Description A digital lineart tutorial I created for use in Photoshop. Theoretically it could be carried over into Painter, but would work better in Photoshop.

I used Photoshop CS2 for this, but I would assume that the version generally does not matter as long as it is relatively new.

You WILL need a tablet for this tutorial. There is no way around it. Wacom makes the best tablets, most off-brands break easily. I used an 9x12 Intuos 3 Wacom tablet, however a 6x8 is just as good. However, a 4x5 tablet is too small and out of scale with your screen. Steer away from them, but it is better than nothing.

I will add an FAQ if it is really needed.

I just started with the tablet i have the 4x5 one, when I draw a line the shape comes out fine but it's way across the screen, is that what happens with the smaller ones? Thank you for the tutorial I really liked it.

ionen In reply to laChat55 [2006-09-29 05:03:04 +0000 UTC]

I started with a 4x5 tablet....

I never had that problem. Your screen should be proportionate/placed the same as your tablet. If you draw a line on the top left of your tablet it should pop up on the top left of your screen.

laChat55 In reply to ionen [2006-10-02 06:31:00 +0000 UTC]

well it's not WAY across the sceen, but it's definately not in the place I expect it to be, did you have that same problem when you first started? ...no one else seems to mention the differences between the sizes of the tablets. Thank you so much for your help!

ionen In reply to laChat55 [2006-10-02 14:07:26 +0000 UTC]

My guess would be that your tablet drivers are messed up. You need to install them if you haven't... or try reinstalling them if you do have them. Or maybe the calibration is off... I honestly never really had that problem unless you're talking about without drivers.

This was really helpful thank you. I do traditionally ink, but there are just times where I just don't want the hassle of scanning and cleaning and this method is very effecive, thank you for showing!

Sonofab*tch!!!! Details Here I Come!!!! Incidentally, if you flatten your image, separating your line-art isn't hard. Actually I learned a technique yesterday that takes all of two seconds.

ionen In reply to minionsultd [2006-09-29 05:01:13 +0000 UTC]

Haha.... what way do you use to seperate lineart from the background? I don't know of a clean way. Doesn't really matter though... I found an older version.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

minionsultd In reply to ionen [2006-09-29 06:31:29 +0000 UTC]

Keep in mind this only works with base lineart. I'm working with Photoshop 7 but ths should work with CS. If you've started coloring or have added something, you're SOL. Ok, assuming you have line on white field ( if not [replace color] works well) set as "background" layer, double-click said layer converts it to layer 0. Set this layer to multiply,(white=transparent) set new layer underneath, color away. Also, assuming black line on white, go to the "channels" tab, (right next to layers) copy a channel(red, blue or green. I prefer blue, but whatever.) Press ctrl-I (not Mac) to invert colors. Hold ctrl while clicking on the inverted copy selects all white (ie, line art). Voila!Your lineart ia now a selection, do whatever your evil little heart commands! I hope this helps you as much as it helped me.

I always wanted to know how you drew your lines. I thought you did it traditionally, to be honest. XD but this is something I might actually be able to do! I suck at traditional inking. T_T anyways, great tutorial. ^_^

ionen In reply to Nikki0417 [2006-09-28 03:41:56 +0000 UTC]

A lot of people seem to think I ink my stuff.

I'm freakin... horrible at inking. If you see in my tutorial I redo stuff over and over again and refine, opposite of inking haha.
