It's worth noting that too many history slates will degrade performance considerably, such to the extent that you may not be able to save because there isn't enough memory leftover. Increasing the amount of RAM you let Photoshop use will let you use more history slates, but it's still a good idea to keep them pruned. Filling up 1000 history slates is very much overkill, and I especially wouldn't recommend it for you, with your 1.6Gb alloted RAM.
Around 50 should be enough for the vast majority of situations, and leaves plenty of headroom for more important things. If you have more RAM, you may be tempted to go more, but it's really not worth it because of how rarely you have to back that far. I let Photoshop use 6Gb RAM, and I only use around 100 history slates. Besides, you can always save history snapshots if you think you may need to undo to a certain point.
Good tutorial, though - I didn't know about history slates until I really started digging down into Photoshop's menus, but you shouldn't be recommending 1000 history slates for everybody.

Thank you for the info. I made this tutorial not to tell people to use 1000, but to tell them how to raise the number. I'll edit that though and mention that they can use any number they want. Thanks again!

Yep.
When I first learned about this, I set it to the max as well, but then I tried to save later on, and found that Photoshop didn't have enough memory left over to save.
This may have been fixed in later versions (this was back in CS2), but it's always a good idea to use as little resources as possible.

Haha yeah, I'm not even sure if they've fixed the later versions, so this stuff is always good to know. I haven't had a problem saving anything while having it on the max number, but I suppose it could be different for other computers with a lower OS - sometimes I don't think these things through as I type out my tutorials.
So thanks again for letting me know!
