I actually prefer Peach as she was in Paper Mario. Sure, she still got kidnapped, but she actually did things to help Mario.

well it's hard not to like that rendition either. I just think her best was in Super Mario Adventures because she did fight back when she could. Granted she still got kidnapped at times but that just gave the whole tired trope a bit more weight to it.

We're not asking for Bomberman: Act Zero or Shadow the Hedgehog-type darkness/edginess, just a more developed story/universe (It could be funnier, too!)!

Nintendo just seems to be so used to the damsel in distress clichΓ©. So whenever a new Mario game is released, it has to have Peach as the victim who`s taken away for the 20th+ time. I really would of liked a new twist to happen at some pint so something new and better can come out of it for Peach.

I kind of agree with this comic completely. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was originally meant to have a completely in depth storyline, but it was scrapped, as Miyamoto claimed he wanted to focus entirely on the gameplay and that story wasn't required to flesh out the game.
Personally, I find that the Mario games where Miyamoto isn't involved often have overall better plotlines because of this. Most of the spinoffs: Super Mario RPG, Mario & Luigi, Mario Party and the Paper Mario games, all have more in depth plotlines and darker stories. If only the main series would adjust for this as well...

I definitely agree that the RPGs tend to have better storylines, but I don't feel the plots have to be so deep, just a little more interesting. 3D Land is the perfect example of that because it actually went into some detail on what Peach goes through while kidnapped. I wish Nintendo did something like that more often. =d

To be honest, I personally have always enjoyed simple plotlines, because it's easier to pickup and play. Cavestory is a prime example of such a game. If all games were to have complex storylines, it would become redundant.
Mario is one such example. For people who want darker storylines, I listed several games that include that, but I personally think the main games should stay simple. Although I do wish the plots were a bit more fleshed out. Removing the story from Galaxy 2 and focusing on gameplay is understandable, but it still does feel somewhat weird to play the same game twice.
Also, I haven't played 3D land yet, but mentioning that, it does sound interesting. I'd like to see more

the fact that they give Peach a shitty weapon is one thing, but to not even make it resemble a Mario game is even worse.

if it were to greatly resemble a Mario game in terms of gameplay then there wouldn't be much of a point in Peach having her own game. I mean look at games like Wario Land or Luigi's Mansion. They barely follow the tropes of the common Mario game, therefore they're unique entries.
As for the shitty weapon deal, I never found Perry all that offensive (except for his pointless backstory). Would you rather Peach be carrying around a Bazooka or something?

eh, if they can find unique uses for Peach to manipulate I'd agree. But otherwise it would make the game far too similar to the Mario games.
this is why I disagree with fans who think Luigi should have his own Big 2D Adventure that plays exactly like SMB. At least the upcoming NSLU actually has a good idea of how a Luigi-Only Platformer should work.

in short I think Mario 2D Platformers should stick with Mario. if they really wanna do another character in the same format they should keep it as a DLC Package like the upcoming New Super Luigi U.
