Description
(Consider this my comeback piece)Within the context of the DC Unlimited, backstories before, during, and after the New 52 can be considered canon, especially characterizations for certain backstories.
Whenever people think of Jason Todd's anger, and his unchecked anger, they usually thank The Joker for turning him into the most lethal member of the Bat-Family. While The Clown Prince of Crime was a key figure into turning Jason into the man he is today, that wasn't necessarily it. Jason was already headed down this path long before. When Batman took him in as Robin, he understood that Jason was no Dick Grayson. How could he? Dick's a light hearted human being, and gifted after his years in Haley's Circus. But Jason was something else. Though possessing great potential, his anger is what drew him back. As a Robin, he had the means and drive but that anger, from growing up in Gotham's worst streets was something that was constantly lingering. But Jason did try to follow in Bruce and Dick's example. He tried to the be hero for his community, fought a few criminals, and tried to protecting the innocent as best he could, almost forgetting the anger that consumed him was still there. This wouldn't last as he reached his teen years. When he confronted Felipe Garzonasl; an drug smuggler, and woman beater. This was the first criminal Jason hated with all of his heart. When he saw the victim Gloria, he was close to savagely killing Felipe on the spot had it not been for Batman. This was eventually reported to the police, but because Felipe's father was a powerful diplomat in Bosatago. Felipe was immediately released, but things would not end there, as right in front of Jason, he called up Gloria which infuriated the young Robin. This was when Jason's anger began to rise to the surface again, he saw the injustices in the system. After all of this time of being "The Boy Wonder", it was right there he saw the system is broken, that not even he nor Batman could ever fix. The final straw was when...after Gloria got the call, Batman and Robin went to check on Gloria, to see if she was alright. That night, was one Jason would never forget, not even after death. In fear of what Felipe would do to her, she hung herself, as Jason saw what she did, that pushed him over the edge. When Felipe was planning on leaving the country, Jason confronted him, beating him on the edge, before he fell to death. For years this was written off to be an accident, and no charges were pressed against Jason for murder. But Bruce suspected. His suspicions were proven when Felipe's father came to Gotham, ultimately dying in a salvage yard in a heated confrontation between the Dynamic Duo. This death is what set Jason onto his path in becoming The Red Hood. Whether it was Joker or someone else, there was no way Batman could ever try and control what Jason would become. And to The Broken Robin, he would do it again, because in his eyes, there's no other option.
