Description Finally done with the Spartan III project I've recently been working on. The model was optimized for games with a low polycount of 8553 tris (3932 MA37 Rifle) and a Diffuse, Normal and Specular map, Occlusion and Normals were baked down from a "High-poly" version of the model.

Textures (The MA37 Rifle as well) were made totally from scratch with reference images from the game Halo Reach (using forge and Theater mode). The model was also rigged (basic) so that I could pose it.

Software I used: Autodesk Maya 2011 - Adobe Photoshop CS5 - xNormal - Marmoset Engine ([link]

I never understood why they made the females like that. I've seen the comics, females had the exact same armor as the males, they even looked the same in armor! if John stood next to Kelly you would see no difference.

I agree :/ I guess it's more "attractive" this way, which is BS in my opinion.

When I read the fall of reach book, this is kinda how I thought the early armor would've looked

Hi there Arbitergomez, I no longer have the original maya file of the Spartan so I can't send you anything. Im planning on rebuilding it some day but for now it'll remain in video and pictures-form only.

I was wondering, looking at this very nice model, is there a trick to making the undersuit? (Mesh, texture-making, wrap, etc.) Cause yours came out VERY well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JasonMartin3D In reply to varsaigen [2011-05-01 16:45:38 +0000 UTC]

The trick is to study your reference real good. The "undersuit" was built and textured like the rest of the model, and it's not a separate mesh though it would be hard to rig. A good advice is the put more effort into the specular map then any other

varsaigen In reply to JasonMartin3D [2011-05-01 18:12:34 +0000 UTC]

Really? Part of the same mesh? Oo

I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!

BloodyPooProductions [2011-01-18 14:44:09 +0000 UTC]

So it's just a female S-III wearing Recon helmet, HAZOP shoulders and standard Mark V MJOLNIR armor? BTW did you read Ghosts of Onyx?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JasonMartin3D In reply to BloodyPooProductions [2011-01-21 00:09:12 +0000 UTC]

R-Type Recon ^^, and no i have not... yet : )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BloodyPooProductions In reply to JasonMartin3D [2011-01-21 03:28:06 +0000 UTC]

Ok. Cause Noble Team has the only Spartan-IIIs with MJOLNIR armor. The rest have SPI which is pretty much ODST armor (as far as the level of protection) but with active camo.

xxVectorZeroxx [2010-11-27 17:49:40 +0000 UTC]

thats frackin awesome. how long does it take to make one of those? and the amount of detail... geez i think i might be getting in over my head on this stuff.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JasonMartin3D In reply to xxVectorZeroxx [2010-11-27 22:42:53 +0000 UTC]

This one took about a week to build and a week to texture. The hardest part was to get the "edge flow" right, though it was meant to be rigged and animated.

xxVectorZeroxx In reply to JasonMartin3D [2010-11-28 06:07:40 +0000 UTC]

i have wondered about that for a while actually, dont you have to separate the meshes to add animated movement? i recall there being someway to "skin" jointed areas to make it appear natural and whatnot.. or something i really need to study more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JasonMartin3D In reply to xxVectorZeroxx [2010-11-28 19:34:57 +0000 UTC]

I rigged this character with a skeleton and then "smooth binded" the mesh to it. I then "painted" areas to react on differently joints which allowed the armor to remain solid even though the rubber is bending since its all one mesh... sort of

xxVectorZeroxx In reply to JasonMartin3D [2010-11-29 01:19:12 +0000 UTC]

ok I get it, thanks ill have to learn how to do that eventually! ah, i really am in deep, making a model to be portrait'd is alot different from making a fuctional game model.
