Description
I drew this cartoon as a tribute to Jim Henson's birthday (Sept. 24th), which ran on the Muppet fan site Toughpigs. For those who don't know, Jim created the original Kermit in 1955 by using his mother's old spring coat as building material. It's always been assumed that the coat was discarded, but I thought it'd be a hoot if Betty Henson hadn't been aware of her son's use of it.Related content

So basically Jim was still a teenager when he created Kermit for Sam and Friends.

Yeah, more or less. He created them in his first years of college, so he wouldn't have even been twenty by the time Sam and Friends premiered.

Good one! Proving it can be, uh, interesting (in the Chinese curse kind of way) to be around creative types.

This made me GOL (giggle out loud). Brilliant!
I have to admit, working at Walmart as I do, every time someone buys a bathmat or other shaggy area rug, I say something to the effect of "Ah, this is 100% genuine Muppetskin right here..."

Ha! In my years of trying to build puppets and buying unconventional building supplies at places like Walmart, I often took comfort knowing where Jim got his earliest materials!

Your Muppet funnies are done out of love. With the cash flow Jim was enjoying from the Muppets, she could buy herself more coats. Nice work.

This is magnificent. Were he still here, I suspect that this is the sort of thing he would hang up on his wall and laugh at every time he looked at it...

From everything I've heard of the man, from his friends, it's nothing but the truth. He'd have laughed his head off at that one.
