I didn't HAVE any rough lines, I didn't do it free hand or anything I just did it straight onto GIMP. Then used the bucket tool to fill in a the colour.

When I first used gimp, I had the problems that I couldn't see on which layer I was drawing etc.
You need to open the picture and click on the second option-thingy on the right, it's called "dialogues" or something. There, click on "layers" and you'll get the list of the layers.
