Description Time for a landmark episode in my top 25 "Mystery Science Theater 3000" countdown. Number 17 is the show's first foray into the products of the twisted mind of Hollywood's most beloved cinematic crossdresser, Ed Wood - 423 "Bride of the Monster"!

Synopsis, from the MST3K Amazing Colossal Episode Guide:
"A film of immense Ed Wood proportions. A waning Bela Lugosi plays mad scientist Dr. Vornoff, with big, brawny, beefy, buttery Tor Johnson as his assistant. Dr. Vornoff subjects some unwitting half-wits to his experiments as he tries to create a superior race of people to take over the world (isn't that always the way?). He feeds the failed experiments to his giant octopus. Dr. Vornoff abducts an intrepid albeit lovely lady reporter who wanders onto his property in search of a story, and tries to make her into a mate for Tor. Tor backfires, kills Dr. Vornoff, and everything ends in a big huge fireball."

It's funny how Tom and Crow's shadows are the same, but Mike's/Joel's head is a cartoon.

I heard this was a "controversial" MST3K episode cause some find Bride of the Monster as a classic bad movie that should not have been riffed

hey, MST3K riffs, but they riff with love. just look at how they handled It Conquered The World

I love this movie because now, every time we watch MST3K, we always try to fit in that line: "Tampered in God's domain."

And if that doesn't work? Then: "Why don't they look?" XD

Thank you for ALL the awesome fanart you've made--it's bringing back fond memories.

Aw, Tor looks so cute! And ripped-shirt reporter on the floor = LOLZ.

I watched this the other day (the MST3K-less version), and it really wasn't that bad for an Ed Wood movie. Lugosi's "I have no home" speech was pretty touching, if poorly written. Plus, he gets in a fight with Tor! How awesome is that?

Personally, I think the riffing on the Tor/"Bela" fight was some of the finest of Season 4 ("Oh no, now he has the strength of 20 heroin addicts!", "This is Bela's best scene and he's not even in it!", etc.).

LOL! I even see the tentacle of the real/fake octopus. (Folks/ Try and link these two shots together. XD) Oh Ed Wod, you've dilvered us true film classic Americana, and gave Bela Legosi his last few minutes on Earth the credit he partially deserved before he could finish creating a "rice of piffle."

And nice version of Tor. He looks cute. XD

jbwarner86 In reply to Kinggigasmon [2007-11-17 19:36:03 +0000 UTC]

It's the octopus, in fact. It exists in two forms throughout the movie - in randomly placed stock footage and as a giant rubber prop that the actors have to flail around in to make it appear to move.

That's Edward D. Wood, Jr. for you - truly, Hollywood's most aggressively incompetent director.

I once had the "Atomic Supermen" speech in my actor's portfolio. Sadly, I never got you perform it, but you never know what the future holds!

Probably the most watchable of Ed Wood's movies. This or "Jail Bait," which should've been MST'd.

Great job, I see Bela has that double-jointed Hungarian beckoning thingy going there. Another good scene for this film would be Bela whipping Tor;

"Do as I command you!!"
*whip*
"ARRRRRRRR!!!!"
*whip*

*whip*
"ARRRRRRRR!!!!"

Hey there. I have to say definitely a great pic. :-D Beautiful art for this. And, yeah, I can see where a VERY cheap knock-off of "the Bride of Frankenstein" could be considered MST3K fodder material. :-D

Captain-Chaotica [2007-11-17 03:30:33 +0000 UTC]

Yaayyy, Bride of the Monster/Atom! One of my favourite MST3K episodes _ever_. The movie is delightfully cheesy on its own, and the riffs just make it that much better. Ed Wood and MST3K--a match made in...somewhere.

...Notorious
