Description
This is a commission for ; it's similar to his previous commissions, larger, of course...because it pays tribute to Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie, the ill-fated 1996 feature film version of everyone's favorite sarcastic puppet show!In case you haven't seen it (and since it only played in about 66 theaters nationwide, I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't), it's basically MST3K with a bigger budget, only with fewer obscure references and a meager 74-minute running time, thank you very much, Universal Studios. The film that they tear apart (quite literally, at one point) is 1955's This Island Earth, a potboiler of a sci-fi yawner that wants so hard to be The Day The Earth Stood Still but doesn't quite have the cojones. But it does have a big-brained slacks-wearing monster, a far distant world made out of matte paintings ("They're very into Yes on this planet"), and a baritone-voiced lunkhead of a hero who learns nothing from his trip across the cosmos. All I learned from this movie is to never unplug my interocitor without properly powering it down first. And that steel waffles are flammable and should be handled with the utmost care.

I think that was one of the inherent hazards in doing an MST3K movie intended for wide release - they had to pick a movie that was bad, but not so bad that it would actually crush the spirits of the audience. This Island Earth is certainly better than crap like The Beast of Yucca Flats or "Manos" The Hands of Fate, but it still has more than enough flaws for the Brains to sink their teeth into.

Yeah that's true. I heard that Best Brains had to pick a Universal movie since the MST3K movie was released by Universal. I'd like to find the full movie since it was edited to fit the 70 something minute run time.

I bought this off I-tunes wondering h it would be. And I was not disappointed! I really think that this movie should have hadmany more showings than it did, it could have shown the wonders of MST3K to so many people. As always the work is great, hope to see more like it. Keep up the great work!

And you did a good job to make sure they landed in Tommy Chong's back yard.

I still pray to the MST3K-gods one day that the FULL version will see the light of day. Universal did such a hack job on it that you blink and it's over. (PS, if you want a Manos-level experience of pain and riffing, I recommend Rifftrax's "Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny"......it makes "Santa Conquers the Martians" look like Casablanca)....)

They riffed the full-length version of TIE at the 1994 MST3K ConventioCon. I'm pretty sure someone out there has home movie footage of the whole thing...

The crew also stated they did a almost-full riffing of TIE for the official movie also (this clocks in closer to a normal episode's length), but that they had to trim it down. They joked the 'full' movie was still sitting in a vault somewhere - but I'll try to track down the 94 con version you mentioned. Thanks!

My main issue with the movie (This Island Earth, not MST3K: The Movie) is that it's all buildup to nothing. They build up and build up and build up and then finally get to the alien planet and are there for all of like two minutes before they're trying to leave again.
