"All this technology has somehow made you a stranger in your own land."
- Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Tutorials and Resources
- Natural lighting (for even indoor lighting): [link]
- Take self-portraits: [link]

Materials and Methods
Nikon D80 + 18-55mm Nikkor + IR remote. Exp +3.0. Window lighting from the side against an angled white wall. GIMP for post editing. Darkened highlights to get rid of the blotches of white over exposure and lightened midtones. Minor color balancing with curves. Not much else.

Additional Comments
Slowly chugging through Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I'm not fond of the literary style but I find the Sutherlands interesting. I find it rather illogical to believe that machines, as the children of human intellect, could possibly dehumanize us. Rather, machines may help us define and realize our very humanity Create it. Command it. Be on top of it.

ah i'm sorry i didn't mean to offend. D: i didn't mean it meanly just a way of saying your skinny. and also, I know what you mean sort of. but hieght wise. because i'm really short. so i really do appologise because i know how antagonising it feels to be bothered about something that's just a part of you. if you're just that skinny naturally than you don't need a burger! haha but that picture inspired me to do one but for short people, if that's ok?

JeanFan In reply to 333KK333 [2010-08-16 21:53:00 +0000 UTC]

Haha it's ok I'm actually 5 feet 4 inches, which is 47th percentile in height so pretty smack dab average but I guess I tend to look taller because I have long legs and a short torso

I'd love to see the results

333KK333 In reply to JeanFan [2010-08-17 00:26:37 +0000 UTC]

yeah.... five foot here.... not so average and people make sure you know you're not normal don't they? i never really thought of it involving being skinny but i guess that can offend to! there's so many different things i mean there is no "normal" is there?

anyway yeah... i have a short torso and legs. also... i wanted to do where i'm looking up at my height and its marked on a door you know? but i'm not sure how i want to go about taking it.

I know I haven't said anything in the longest time, but... this is beautiful. The tilt of the model's head and her pose are perfect.

I agree with your view on the issue of technology completely; it just adds a new wrinkle to the social fabric.

The problem's plain to see: too much technology. Machines to save our lives, machines dehumanize.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JeanFan In reply to EternallyGodBless [2010-08-14 02:22:18 +0000 UTC]

I actually completely disagree. The point is to efficiently command technology just like any other mundane tool. I find it rather illogical to believe that machines, as the children of human intellect, could possibly dehumanize us. Rather, machines may help us define and realize our very humanity Just my two cents.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EternallyGodBless In reply to JeanFan [2010-08-14 02:28:08 +0000 UTC]

But people still completely depend on machines and forget about their own abilities...

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

JeanFan In reply to EternallyGodBless [2010-08-14 02:43:03 +0000 UTC]

Then they do not fully command the machine they use . But I can see your point, particularly with students and calculators these days. For example many students just use their calculators to find the transpose of a matrix without understanding where that transpose came from. Ideally, the student should first understand where the transpose comes from and then use the calculator only as a simplification of the tedious process. I work in bioinformatics where algorithms are developed for computers in order to sift through terabytes of data to look for patterns and find a handful of putative oncogenes...now if a person tested the genes one by one, I don't know how many lifetimes that would take haha. Technology is used as an extension of human ability; we can do it...but a computer just does it much more quickly

cyclone1164 In reply to EternallyGodBless [2010-08-14 02:29:32 +0000 UTC]

I disagree. Machines enhance our abilities. Would you really want to live 100 years ago?
