Description
Click here for a Blank TemplateI've fallen behind on Game Reviews a little, so here's another Step to catching things Up.
Some of the things I have problems with might confuse people, so allow me to elaborate on them here:
-The Part I'm referring to in Labyrinth Ruins is This Bit Right Here I'd like to thank the Let's Player here for Demonstrating why that was So Frustrating! No joke, I actually timed out later on in the stage because of that Stupidity!
-Episode I's ending was actually fine, it's Episode II's ending that bugged me. It just ends abruptly-we don't even get to see Sonic or Tails jump at the Screen to make a Pose-and if you get the Good Ending... NOTHING... Not even a "Conglaturations! The Story is Happy End!" It's a shame they couldn't do any better.
Also, why wasn't Knuckles in this Game? I mean this WAS Supposed to Take Place after Sonic 3 and Knuckles!
Anyway, If you're wondering how I'd grade these one at a time, Episode I was very Underwhelming, but Episode II added some fun stuff to make the experience more bearable, so I'd probably give them a C- and a C+ respectively...
Overall, I'd probably put Sonic 4 slightly above Sonic Forces. Not a terrible game, but one you'll only Beat for the Sake of Beating it. At least these two have better level design than Forces, as well as more uses for the abilities you have.

Calling it Sonic 4 was a cheap marketing gimmick. If anything, Sonic Adventure 1 is the true Sonic 4 - the 4th main Sonic game after the Sonic 3 & Knuckles 2-parter.

Honestly this game and Sonic Mania should switch titles. Then they would be a little bit more accurate.

Just a reminder, people. Every attempt to "go back to Sonic's roots" has been a miserable failure. Generations was a fluke and Mania was made by people who actually give a shit about good game design - and even then SEGA still managed to screw up with it.

Eh... I wouldn't call them complete failures (since Sonic 4 and Forces had a couple things that I think could've been executed better in higher quality games) I'd say major disappointments would be a more accurate term for these games.

Still, though. Every attempt outside of Generations (clearly a fluke) and Mania (made by another team) haven't worked that well.

I guess...
Still, I'm not sure if I can consider Generations a Fluke since it seemed to be more riding off the success of Sonic Colors and Unleashed back when the "Boost Formula" wasn't starting to overstay its welcome.

Admittedly, Fluke is probably a bit strong a word, but Forces was such a horrible version of the Boost engine mechanics that if baffles me. The controls, graphics and level design were perfectly fine on the OLD Hedgehog Engine...why're they so bad on the Hedgehog Engine 2?
Well, the level design did sort of get confirmed to be the work of rank amatures, but still.

I found the game functional, but EXTREMELY Sub-Par. Honestly it's mostly the Level Design that bothered me. Everything from the Unloseable sections, to the Cheap Death Sections, to even things like the Level Select Screen which is ALL KINDS of Screwed Up!
I suppose everything else was okay (well except for the Story which was REALLY Stupid, that and more missed opportunities than I can count) but sadly it doesn't do enough to warrant my defense...
As far as I'm concerned, the game just exists. And that's the most I can say about it...

I must admit, I'm kind of bias on it all, but I find Forces to be my least favourite Sonic game made thus far. It's not exactly the WORST; there are Sonic games out there that look worse, play worse, sound worse, ect. But Forces is my least favourite game for a number of reasons. Partly, it took a lot of the concepts and characters I liked from the Modern games, crushed them into the ground and somehow screwed up a lot of the concepts they had did before. Tails' character assassination, Sonic's pathetic "torture", the lies with the returning villains, just Infinite in general...it feels like the game was cynically rushed out so that they could focus on Classic Sonic more. Rushed...in FOUR YEARS. What did they do all that time? Stare drooling over a copy of Sonic 1's instruction manual?
All considered, Forces will probably be the last Sonic game I'll buy in quite a while, if ever.

And I'm probably biased in the other direction... For whatever reason, my mind just refuses to believe that most Sonic games are terrible. And it's not like there wasn't anything I enjoyed from Sonic Forces. The Waterslide Sections were fun, I also liked the Double-Boost (for like... the ONE LEVEL that you got to use it), I had a lot of enjoyment for Making an Avatar Character look like Bubsy and then Setting everything on Fire with him (actually simultaneously playing as it & Sonic worked far better than I thought), and I remember that one Classic Deathegg section gave me... a fraction of that Nostalgic Joy from playing Mania. (also the Shadow episode was an interesting idea on paper... And for all the ridicule the plot twist gets, at least the ring dash was fun...)
But like I said... I can't really defend the game-particularly for the reasons you listed-especially because there wasn't NEARLY ENOUGH of the good stuff throughout the game. All of it is Short Lived. At best, Forces is a game that you'll quickly plow through for the sake of beating everything and then probably forget about after you're done with it! And that saddens me, because I know that these people can do better! Novices or not, Professionals or not, regardless of whatever they did before, there's no reason they can't do better!
Honestly, I really think there's no better way to put it Than AntDude did here... I really don't like seeing this Franchise get the amount of Flack it does, but in this case, it's kind of necessary if we want more games like Adventure 1 & 2...

I mean don't get me wrong, there are bits of Sonic Forces I like. Well, one bit. The Avatar system. And even then it needed just that little more customisation and most people just made Coldsteel or horrible characters with beards and big eyes. 'Cause lord knows we need MORE mockery of fan characters in this day and age. Oh, and I admire the modding community for fixing something that was never finished to begin with. But apart from that? Yeah, nothing. Even Sonic 06 at least felt like it knew what it wanted to do with itself. It was the execution that was the major issue, while with Forces its every aspect of its design.
Ant-Dude, hmm? I see you're a man of taste. In all seriousness, I like him too. Feels like the only Youtuber to give Sonic some slack.

Honestly, I'm hoping the could one day Remake Sonic 06 except... you know... less glitches... and less loading screens... and maybe easier to find your way around the Hub-World... They can keep the dumb story about the Princess, I'd just want the game to be fun one day...
Also I heard of AntDude when cjszero01 gave him a couple of shoutouts. They're BOTH Cool!

I'd like that, but not so. SEGA refuses to touch that game with a barge pole, considering its reputation. Even if it WAS good, people would still write it off because...well...it's a Sonic game. They gotta shit on that there blue hedgehog, 'cause it's popular to do so! Sonic was never good! All Sonic fans are weirdoes! The franchise should just die! It never worked in 3D and never will!
Uh, yes, Sonic Utopia would like a word with you on that on...
I feel a straight remake probably wouldn't be the best idea. Perhaps more a reimagining, like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Perhaps have it so that characters go back in time and try to alter the timeline so events go more...smoothly, shall we say. Get a bit meta with the game's infamy.
Haven't heard of cjszero, must admit. Might give his channel a look, though.

I guess the Sonic Shattered Memories idea could work... Also SEGA should hire the Utopia people for the NEXT Anniversary Game...
(for cjszero01, I'd recommend Favorite and Hated MarioKart Powerups, Favorite and Hated Sonic Characters (with WiiDude), 5 Best Video Game Remakes, Personal Favorite Wii or Wii U games, The DKC Reviews, the Smash Reviews, the Shovel Knight Review, the Mighty No 9 Review, or the Star Wars Battlefront Reviews... I have a feeling you might get a kick out of him...)

At this point they should just disband Sonic Team and reform the Sonic-making division in either Europe or America. Leave the out-of-touch old farts to their Yakuza and their pachinko.
Alright, I'll check him out, then. Cheers.
