CAPSTAANG WEEK, DAY TWO:
13/7 REALITY IS CRASHING TO THE FLOOR

I was young but I wasn't naive
I watch helpless as you turn around to leave

“Toph please, reconsider,” Aang begged, trailing after him like a kicked puppy. “You’re just acting in the heat of the moment, you shouldn’t—”

“No Aang, this was a long time in coming.” Shouldering his knapsack, Toph turned and glared in her direction.

“Do you think this is easy, waiting after a girl when all she does is chase hopelessly after some other guy? You can’t—” He broke off and sighed, briefly pinching the bridge of his nose between thumb and forefinger. “You can’t expect me… you can’t ask me to keep doing this indefinitely.”

“I never asked you to be anything but my Earthbending teacher… and my friend.” Aang whispered—and it was true, she hadn’t. So why did he sound like she’d been leading him on this whole time? “All I wanted was to defeat the Fire Lord, win the war and restore peace.”

“Well, now the war’s over.” Toph removed something from underneath his sleeve, and even without looking Aang knew it as the space earth Sokka'd given him, which he'd metalbent into an armband—one of his few treasured possessions, and one he wore constantly. “And so are we.”

“Toph, what—?”

“This is Sokka’s,” he cut her off, taking her hand brusquely and pressing the metal ring into it. Startled, Aang only barely managed to close her fingers around it in time before he let go.

“You can pretend he gave it to you directly, if that makes you happy,” he added, as he spun on his heel and strode away.

I would fall asleep only in hopes of dreaming
That everything would be like it was before
But nights like this it seems are slowly fleeting
They disappear as reality is crashing to the floor...

I did the right thing, didn't I? He argued silently to himself, standing in front of an open cabinet that held nothing that he would possibly need for his journey back to his parent's estate (HIS estate). I mean, there’s no point to hanging on where I’m not wanted.

Toph slammed the cabinet shut, and opened the one next to it.

I thought… I had a chance. Even if she liked Sokka—

Slam. Open.

—She sounded pretty crushed when I said I was leaving.

Slam.

Maybe I screwed up.

Slam.

...Yeah, I definitely screwed up.

Slam.

“Damnit,” Toph breathed in frustration, leaning his head against the wood and closing his eyes.

Idly and almost subconsciously, a tiny tiny part of him wondered if there had been even the remotest possibility... that Aang had liked him back.

...Not that it mattered. It was too late to do anything about it now, wasn't it?

After all this why
Would you ever want to leave it?
Maybe you could not believe it
That my love for you was blind
But I couldn't make you see it

That I loved you more than you will ever know
And part of me died when I let you go...
