Description Yep, I'm telling everyone how I made the wolves in Wolf Mates II - haha, maybe I shouldn't... but I'm going to, anyways. It's shockingly simple - anyone can do it!

Hope it makes sense, and that it's useful... and that I'll get to see lots of furry things in the near future

Oh, just scribbling and smudging? Looking at the finished piece, I thought it would've taken much more hard work... Thanks for breaking the secret!

Indeed, the process is incredibly simple. However, yielding a satisfactory result can still be difficult. Think about it - playing piano is just pressing a bunch of buttons, and drawing is just dragging a stick along a surface. The process, basically, is incredibly simple, but that doesn't mean it's easy to do it WELL.

Anyways, heh, best of luck to you - lemme know how it goes if you use it

Sure, I'll tell you when I'm drawing any furry creatures

Wooow.. Thanks! Not sure if this is encouraging or disappointing. ("Whaat, you mean I can't just click a button, and the computer will do it for me???" ) heehee! Naw, it's encouraging. It means if I work up the patience, I can do this! Funny how often the simplest things seem the hardest, eh? This is exactly what I did to make the mohawk in my current W.I.P. troll portrait (except more smudging, less paint/blocks of color). Also, for the inking, all I'm really doing differently is being brave and going really really slowly. ....not too complicated, but as you've seen, it makes all the difference! But thank you very very much for making a tutorial like this! I think a lot of times we just need to be SHOWN how easy something is before we'll believe it, and I found this very clear and easy to understand, anyway! So thanks, and please make more tutorials in the future for stuff people are pestering you to teach them! This was very helpful!

jocarra In reply to Zyenthillias [2005-04-12 06:13:47 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah, my mom used to think that anything made on computer was made BY the computer, essentially... She thought that, up until she tried to make a simple birthday card in Adobe and it took her over an hour Haha...

And yeah, it's shockingly easy. I kind of didn't want to submit this, because it was almost embarrassing how simple it was, and now everyone who sees it will be able to make realistic critters!

Warmaster In reply to ??? [2005-04-12 04:42:19 +0000 UTC]

That's cool. I honestly had no idea how to do something like that completely from scratch in photoshop. Quite helpful.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to Warmaster [2005-04-12 06:11:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, making something from scratch in PhotoShop can be daunting at first - I still remember mine X3. Anyways, hope this inspires you to take a shot at realism or pseudo-realistic stuff *wonders what Khrhrn would look like*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Warmaster In reply to jocarra [2005-04-12 20:00:53 +0000 UTC]

It was quite helpful to me... come to think of it I'd like to try that: draw Khrhrn in as photorealistic a style as I'm able to, just to satisfy my own scientific curiousity as to what such a race would look like "for real." Probably pretty implausible, with the long black hair on the head and such ... I think he'll just have to stay more cartoon-like in practice though. Would you be able to do a tutorial for traditional pencil/color pencil/mixed media technique (like your recent charcoal montage?) (or at least lend some hints on how to get clean, flowing lines in pencil and keep lineiness down (I still feel I'm too liney), and blending etc... I'd like to try something like that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to Warmaster [2005-04-12 21:36:02 +0000 UTC]

Gah... I replied, but dA crashed just as I tried to submit.... Mrrghh...

Anyways, yeah, that's the same reason why I eventually dropped the humanesque hair for Ash - it just didn't work very well when I went to draw realistically.

I don't know how helpful a graphite tutorial would be, seen as how it relies a lot on personal skill, but I'll see what I can do. The mixed media one might be more helpful, in that I could show the order in which I do things, and what medium is used for what. I probably won't be able to get around to it until May or so, though.

If I ever really decide to do something with my drawings (not those odd sketches I've submitted, but the ones I keep hidden away...not much better than the sketches, but a little better) than I'll remember this for my cats. And perhaps some day I'll try wolves.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to BrokenHeartedSoul [2005-04-12 02:50:23 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, why do you keep your best sketches hidden away? Are you keeping a big secret? Or are you just wanting to surprise us with your brilliance when you finally do submit them, all polished and finished?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BrokenHeartedSoul In reply to jocarra [2005-04-12 04:05:43 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, a combination of both I guess. Some of them I'm not sure I want to share with the world quite yet, and others I'm thinking of how to make them all pretty with PhotoShop.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to BrokenHeartedSoul [2005-04-12 06:05:29 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, yeah, I can understand that I sometimes do that... but, err, not very often
