Description
In the women's public toilets inside Issingham Street metro station, Joelle sits curled up on the lowered toilet lid for a second or two until she realizes she is vulnerable this way. She feels she should be ready to act, ready to spring into action if the situation requires it, and sitting there all bundled up with her clothing and her feet off the ground makes her ill-prepared for any such action.

She quietly lowers her feet and sees that she can place her blouse and sweater over the toilet-roll holder, which she does. She then slides her arms into her blazer and drapes the tie around her neck. Her hands are now free and unencumbered.

Free, that is, except for her phone. She is reminded that she still has the 999 call open, presumably with the operator hearing everything that has been going on. She lifts the phone to her ear. "Hello? Are you still there?" she whispers.

"Yes, Miss Whitson, I'm still here. Where are you now? Is the man still following you?"

"I ain't seen him since I left the woods so I dunno but I'm in the ladies' loos right now, in one of the cubicles. I'm scared, there's nowhere else for me to run if he finds me here," Joelle says into the phone.

"Okay, Joelle. I need you to stay calm and remain where you are. The police car is almost there. Two officers are on their way to help you and one of them is female. She has been given your name and she will call out to you using it so you will know who it is. Do you understand?"

"Yes, yes! Please hurry!" Joelle answers, half listening to the voice on the phone and half listening to her present surroundings for any sound to tell her someone is approaching.

She climbs back onto the toilet lid, deciding to stand up to get a view over the side of the cubicle and hoping to see who might enter the room. When she is standing upright and leaning against the wall, she notices that this position feels much more prepared than she had felt before, and if things come down to it then she can jump from the toilet and, just as she did before , try incapacitating her pursuer, this time with her shoes on to inflict more damage.

She hopes she will not have to resort to such an action but Joelle knows she will be ready to do so if the situation demands it.
