YESSSS Half Life...
I got to Xen, at what I'm assuming is nearly the end. But every time I try to go through the teleporter, the game freezes. FREEZES, I SAY!
The game is trying to drive me mad...

I agree completely It was such an amazing ride until Xen - and even a bit of the part leading up to Xen. Totally lost its feel for me, there.

ALL OF THIS=SO TRUE

It took me forever to beat Nihalath(sp whatever)..until I figured out how to destroy his power source. He got me aggravated more than anything else in my ENTIRE LIFE...and when I killed him, the day was sweet.

Y'know thy're making a mod. it will be almost EXACTLY like Half-life but with the half-life 2 source engine. I may hear you saying: "But wait! They already made one of those!" First of all this isn't being made by valve. Second the old half-life source was not particularly different from the original. The graphics still sucked dong. We will soon have Black mesa: Source to ease our pain my friend. You just wait.

Half Life was great, but it is inferior to Duke Nukem 3D, Metroid Prime and all the games based on the original Doom-engine.

On secound thought, it is on of the most overrated games ever:

-spotting an enemy at a distance, fiering the shotgun until it is empty, fiering the machine gun until it is empty, killing it with the pistol
-Xen
-never knowing if you hurt the enemy
-killing a tank with the pistol
-Xen
-the lame bosses
-no proper ending

Yeah, the Huge Soundhunter Thing in the Rocket Engine Test Area was definetly one of the Scariest Parts of the Game, where you had to sneak around with Grenades to Manually prepare the Engine to Cook the F*ck out of the Snake Thing...
...Even if the End of HL1 stunk, It led to arriving on a Train in a City somewhere in Europe, on a Devestated Planet we used to call earth... Good thing all the Rebelious Humans Rejoiced when Freeman came to turn the Tides on the Combines and Kick their Asses...

you nailed it! The Half-Life had me sucked right in when I first started crawling down the first air duct... the SOUNDS were PERFECT! Then, in pitch black, the head crab scares the crap out of you! Beating it to death with a crow bar was nice .

But by the end, as you say, it was more like "whaaaa?" Very disappointing!

Surely I'm not the only one who believed that Xen set Half-Life apart from corridor shooters more than it already was. Aside from occasionally confusing architecture and level design, it was a unique insight into the enemy's homeworld.

When I played through Halflife for the first time and came accross Xen I didn't think it was all that bad, in fact, I quite liked the strange and surreal surroundings in the level. I think the reason that it has become a place of hatred to all players of Halflife is because they spend the entire game building up suspense and the ever growing feeling that you are but one man with a makeshift array of weapons trapped within a chlostrophobic landscape riddled with hiding enemies waiting to pounce on you from the dark abyss; it creates such a brilliant sense of mortality and tension. Now when you go into Xen suddenly it's a vibrant utopia of pretty colours in which you can jump over 9000 meters into giant rainbow-drenched spires which makes it feel a little less scary and more like an early Crash Bandicoot game.
As I said, I liked it at first, but I soon grew tired of the whimsical physics and surroundings. It just didn't really feel right for the game.

Never liked Xen; It was just a big shock after the rest of the game had such good level design and gameplay. The end boss also annoyed me; on top of him sending portals at you to throw you into alternate areas briefly just to delay things, there was the whole finishing bit: You're supposed to get above him and shoot into his now exposed brain to finally kill him. Due to the movement rates, I kept missing with the only weapon I figured was useful, the RPG, so I just landed on his head instead, and proceeded to smack his brain repeatedly with the crowbar.

Still, I liked HL 1 more than HL2. The Gravity Gun was great fun, but it was the only weapon I liked in that game, and wasn't powerful enough for a mainstay (until it inexplicably became ultra-powerful, which was great for shits and giggles, but a retarded balance decision). In any shooter, I always find one gun I really like and stick with as much as possible, but this didn't happen in HL2; in HL1 I loved the revolver a lot, but the pathetic amount of ammo made it a poor choice at best, and HL2 just aggravated that. (I liked Opposing Force more for this very reason, much improved weapons)

If Half-Life pc is the same as the ps2 version (and I'm guessing it is from the pictures lol), then you forgot to mention how long and mind-numbing the commute to work was (especially if you died before saving early in the game and had to do it AGAIN), or how creepy that guy in the suit is who you see walking around all the time but can never kill no matter how perfect your aim is. I tried.
Who was that guy anyway? He bothered me.

Who? Gman?
I think he's a brilliant character in the game as you never really get to see what he's up to or where he's going; even at the end you stit there questioning where the hell he's from.
