In Belgium at least they fully automated the tax forms now; if you don't change anything on the online form it's accepted by default even if you do nothing. They already know everything anyway, so why the heck would we have to waste time filling it in?

That doesn't work for someone who's self-employed and making differing amounts of money with each commission session and has to self-report the amounts made and taxable.

It's an insult on two distinct levels: First that they take so much and second that they don't at least try to look like Nigel Hawthorne as Sir Humphrey while they take it.

I'd really rather they looked and acted like Derek Fowlds as Bernard Woolley.

Yeah ... but with Appleby you at least knew you were gonna be totally screwed (unless of course you were one of the boys) where with Woolley you might have false hope for catching a break.
Bernard was always being caught being fair minded, something Humphrey tried to disabuse him of ("Well done, Bernard. You'll be a moral vacuum yet!").

That is quite depressingly accurate, although Bernard was also caught between 2 stools in that he felt that he had a duty to do his best for Hacker, but knew that Appleby was the man responsible for his salary and promotion prospects.

Completely random follow up ... a long time later.
Considering the attitudes of the characters actually expressed in Yes, Prime Minister / Yes, Minister what would they have done with Brexit were the show being made now?
Hacker of course was a "European" and yet a classic politician climbing the greasy pole.
Appleby might wonder how they can mess things up from the outside compared to mucking stuff up from the inside ... yet a closet Brexiter torn?
... and Bernard, gosh, he might say, it was the way the vote went.
"Bernard, since when has the the civil service cared about the popular vote? May as well start caring about what the politicians want!"Β

The small consolation is that as an artist you actually earn enough to PAY tax. The alternative is sitting on the pavement next to a cardboard sign saying "Will draw boobies for food".

tax isn't not always that bad
for example income tax was invented in the 1790's to help pay for a war against the french!
